Deer ate Rhododendron leaves...do I cut back or leave alone
Comments (1)A healthy plant will normally fully recover if you do nothing except guard against drought. If it isn't mulched, mulch to conserve moisture, keep weeds down and reduce winter stress. It is important the deer don't defoliate it two years in a row. That could be fatal. A rhododendron will usually come back once, but since it is stessed it may not come back two years in a row. I would just get some deer netting like the product they have at Ace Hardware and cover it next winter to insure that you don't have a repeat performance. Remove the netting in the spring before the plant blooms. Then, since you have a fence, after one winter it should be OK unless the deer come back in the future....See MoreStrange damage on leaves of rhododendron
Comments (9)It is relatively minor. However, new damage appears because I watch my plants. The plants were small when I bought them from retail store. I bought them in 1/4 container. There were NO mechanical damage during transportation. I did research, and I know that leaves can be deformed if roots were eaten by larvae or grubs. Brown discoloration is caused by sap sucking insect because I used insecticide on leaves and it helped a little bit (less damaged leaves on two shrubs). Probably, "eggs" is slow release fertilizer because these eggs are scattered around the pot and in a bag of Miracle Grow Garden soil. Anyway, I will solve problem by contacting entomologist or plant pathologist....See MoreDeer Reistant Hybrid Rhododendron?
Comments (11)Thanks for the responses. Rhodyman, that's an interesting experience.I guess for 35 years you must have thought you had the deer thing figured out, like,no biggie, right? I've come to one conclusion after contending with things at a couple of friends places for several years, and that is...with deer there are no conclusions. In desperation,I guess they can develop a taste for anything, and once they do,it's burned in their DNA to come back to it.You read the conflicting info from people in different places on what they go after and what they don't and you realize there are no answers, just a real rough guideline to go with. And if you throw starvation in there, well forget everything you knew. Sorry to hear about your problems, kinda takes the fun out of things, right? I guess we are all just one rough winter away from devastation. I always figured that the deciduous azaleas were a safe alternative. My friend has a Flame Azalea (R calendulaceum) that was probably part of the original foundation planting,as it is about 10 feet tall and quite a specimen. However,if the deer were smart enough to pull a bud off of it in the winter,I'm sure they would clean it yearly. I'm going to keep an eye on the evergreen Hybrids Rhododendrons this year, maybe I'll post some photos in here if I can,to illustrate why I asked the question in the first place. BTW,I wasn't able to click anything to get your photos,if you tried to post some....See MoreRhododendron Cold Damage
Comments (2)Agree with Babs. More frost tonight apparently here in MidTN. Unusually cold spring this year. So tired of it. Hate to see my beautiful ferns turn black....See Morejoel_bc
