I have to agree with you even though I thought it might have been 'Fairytale'.
The size of this flower measured 7.5". So, it is too large for 'Fairytale'.

Another possibility is Carnival

Thank you for pointing that out. I looked at your Dec posting, it is possible to be a Carnival, isn't it?
More description may be helpful.
The scape is about 16", strong and stalky. Again, the flower measure 7.5".

Four blooms from each scape.
Interesting thing is that two blooms on the opposite side have opened up, while the other two are still relatively small and of the same size. I will capture an image of it and post later.

Carnival is from South Africa, while Clown is from the Netherlands. Since my bulb is from S&H, I am still calling it Clown for now.

Well, Arif, I like to put names on mine...like with friends, I like to know them by their names. It just seems more...friendly, I guess. Also, I like to know what each bulb will produce by looking at its tag. I suppose it would not matter so much if they were growing en mass for my own enjoyment outside like yours, but where each one is potted and looked forward too for weeks, I just like to be able to think of it with a name! I am like that with all my flowers. I might tell my girl friend that "teasing Georgia is about to burst into bloom, and she will know exactly what I am seeing because she knows my Teasing Georgia rose. And if we are planning a bouquet for one of our churches over the phone, I might say "I am going to have 3 Cafe Au Lait dahlias ready, then she immediately knows which colors we need to go with them because she knows Cafe Au Lait dahlia really well. IT is so much easier then saying "That big pale colored dahlia with the tints of pink and brown in the cream". THat is the way I see it anyhow. Names are a shorthand to describing a flower.

As Jodik pointed out in another thread, for an untrained eye, it is usually difficult to confidently ID a Hippi.

Let me give my version of the explanation. This may help explain why it can be so helpless at times.

As we know, many if not most of the commercially available Hippis are hybrids, meaning they were created by the breeders who might have used the native species created by nature and/or hybrids created by humans. And guess what, you and I can try to create our own hybrids too like what you have seen in other threads. Just to give an example, Bryan mentioned that he tried the "Picotee X Dancing Queen" recently.

Now, since to the end, these hybrids probably all come from the very few same ancestors, then no wonder many of them, created by differet breeders, can be so similar and so difficult to be told apart.

Still, like Lizalily, I like to put names to my Hippis. Then, when April (or later) comes, I can join the trading post and auction off my Hippis with names, not with pictures. Granted, people may still want to see the pictures.

Personally, I like to have my bulbs all tagged with the proper names. It makes it easier to keep track of which I have, which I'm looking to get, which I've bred and whom I've bred it to, etc...

There are many reasons that certain blooms appear so similar that novices like me can't tell the difference... to a professional grower, two flowers that appear the same to us might be completely different varieties. There would be little things that we'd probably not notice that make them registrable as two separate varieties. A frill here, a stripe there, a petal length or shape, a scape height, etc... or even a difference in when they bloom, culture needs... the variables could be quite a lot.

When I look at the flower in question, the name Baby Star comes to mind. I don't know if that's correct... it just comes to mind. I did too much yesterday, so I don't have the capacity to search out the probable correct name right now... whatever its correct name, it's a perky little fellow and I like it! The stripes are very eye-catching!

Yes. It could have been Popov, too. But not Baby Star, the now 8 inch flower is, I think, too big for it to be Baby Star.

The picture that shows an interesting charactertics where it seems the two unopened blooms are similar in size. For the two plants I have, they share this similarity.

Now, the name Clown comes to mind... I think Popov is a bit more flat-faced and the shape is different, like my Vivaldi. Cocktail is a possibility. I'd say Sydney, but there is not enough white... is it Clown?

I thought when I submitted the pic, that the white was a pretty good match to my Clown. Plus Clowns blooms are huge! This was my very first Hip, in 2000. I love her lol!!

I am glad that the pictures has helped cheer you days and thanks a lot for help ID my Clowns. I am almost done with lesson one on Hippis. For me, that is potting them after the purchase, doing everythig wrong, and waiting for them to bloom. LOL!

One of my Clows actually has a baby already. The first leaf has just poked out of the soil. Among other things, this sign has marked the beggining of my lesson two, track 1. The track 2 is yet to start. For me, it is to try to collect the seeds from the seed pods and sow them.

I will have more pictures to share with you in due course.
