Sprouting without stratification

Is it possible to grow oak from acorns without the stratification process i.e the refrigerator thing? I have collected acorns in the second week of November and put them in a pot on my balcony, more or less the way this guy has done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJRScwG-rAs (sticking out of the ground, closely planted, only the pot is just 15 cm deep)

When is the reasonable time to expect germination (or is it too optimistic to expect that?) and do I need to bring them inside during below zero nights?

In addition, the acorns are a bit weird looking i.e something like this photo: http://honest-food.net/2009/12/26/acorns-and-the-foragers-dilemma/. Would anyone know the type of oak? Collected in Skopje, Macedonia (Balkans, Mediterranean etc)

Thanks!
