When will my red buckeye leaf out?

Hi,

Just curious if any of you know what month the red buckeye begins to leaf out. I read that its one of the first. Also, do any of you fertizilze your red buckeyes to get max growth or blooms?-Thanks

Dan Standard Reply #3: fertilizing trees is generally a waste of money. Especially to promote bloom.

I'll add that in 'most' cases, fertilization can delay bloom at the expense of artificial vegetative growth. Trees (all woody plants) should never to fertilized in order to produce accelerated growth, but should be encouraged to enjoy 'normal' growth.

those branches look pretty low.. wont they be pruned off in the future.. if so.. who cares what they do .. i had a lot of stuff to be moved this year... april was july in temps... may was march with 6 inches of rain ... most of my stuff just didnt get moved.. because it was too hot in april.. prime moving time.. and i just didnt want to be out there in may ... all that said.. yours is leafed.. it is alive.. and you have plenty of other things to look at .. quit worrying about this one.. ITS ALIVE ... thats all i really hope for the first year ... keep it properly watered during the hot part of summer ... and late into the fall ... ken ps: prune them off if it will help you stop fixating on them... though we usually dont prune the first year.. what is the point of a leafless branch anyway ...

When do red buckeyes drop their seeds?

If I remember correctly, the seeds ripen in late summer to Fall. I had one several years ago but I dug it to give to a friend's parents who are from Ohio, the Buckeye state. I do seem to remember seeing them still on the bush in the woods in late Fall as well.

I just Wanted to clarify a little more. I know your nutrient solution probably contains the mineral element that the plant needs to produce the color, but needs more to get the rich coloring your looking for. It could also be reducing the the amount of some mineral element/s in the nutrient solution that aid in the production of chlorophyll in the plants leaves will do the same thing. Whichever it is I don't really want to guess. As I mentioned, I would contact many nutrient manufactures. Your bound to reach someone familiar with growing red leaf lettuce, or at least know someone who does like a commercial grower they sell products to.

In North Georgia, mine start to leaf out in April. I don't fertilize - adequate sun is the best way to get good blooms.

coalescing both answers.. and adding..

the only time to fert is if it is a potted plant.. watered by means that involves flushing the media repeatedly .. so that new nutrients must be re-introduced ..

a tree will bloom when it is mature enough to bloom.. and food will not speed maturity ... eh??

my boy is eight.. and if i feed him 20,000 calories a day .. he will not become 10 years old ... nor will he flower ...
