Wow, that's quite a set-up Jackie. I've just pollenated a bulb for the first time and I'm anxiously waiting for the pod to open - I can see what I'm in for, though ;-) It sure is a space consuming hobby. How old are your seedlings? Mine look totally anemic compared to yours! I probably have them in pots that are too small, though most of mine are different varieties and crosses, so they could be just naturally smaller. My Minerva seedlings are actually rather large.

Yes, I adore that urn full of Apple Blossoms when they're in bloom! They're beyond gorgeous! Something about how Victorian and stately they look all together in that urn... I don't know... it's breathtaking!

Indeed, thanks a lot for sharing your setup. I am new. Like Alana, I am waiting for my first seed pod to ripen too. Hope it actually makes it. This morning I realized that I overwatered it. I am keeping my finger crossed.

I am still working toward a more manageable system for my growing number of bulbs. At the moment, three of them are sitting in the original pots without drainage holes.

gmwill=CONGRATS! You are suckered in now!! Your Apple Blossom is lovely, but no one needs to tell you that. Your first blooms are so very personal..I hope this is just a stepping stone to many many amaryllis!!!

Alana you'll be surprised when you see how many seeds are in one pod! That's how you end up with all this lol.

Hi Frank. I know I don't have the where-withall to sell anything on line. I work for an arboretum, so maybe when we have one of our plant sales I can try. Problem is - I want to see them all bloom first!

Jodi thanks - but I've seen pics of your seedlings and they're NOT anemic lol. I agree on the pot size. I know if I could give each one room to grow they'd get bigger so much faster. If we only had greenhouses!

I updated again last year in February so they are two years old next month.

I've taken to only planting about a dozen of each seed variety... this way, there won't be so much precious space taken up by young stock! Of that dozen seeds planted, some are bound to not germinate, and of those that do germinate, only so many will make it to adulthood. This gives me enough to work with, but not too many!

We do have a greenhouse... but it sits in boxes out in the garage... it will take some constructing to get it put together and make it functional, and we just don't have the manpower at present to do the work. Eventually, though, it will get erected and used. The unfortunate part is... it's not mine, and it won't be coming with me when we finally move! Oh well... Larry said he'd try to work on a greenhouse for me at our final destination... where ever that might be!

Wow!! This is exactly why I took the screen name of "aseedisapromise". Seeds just really like to make plants! Lots of them! More than you ever know what to do with! Bless their hearts. Nice work.

GM, your Apple Blossom is lovely, and as your first I know how special it must be. My first was a Minerva, and she's still with me.

A word about pots and soils and growing large numbers of bulbs indoors... in our northern climate, it pays to invest in some decent lighting... I use regular shop light fixtures with warm and cool tubes... and I'm sold on using mainly unglazed clay pots and a more free-draining, porous medium for growing.

Over-watering is probably the number one killer of bulbs. Many bulbs actually prefer to be grown as succulents, and like to be kept a bit drier than their tags and instruction will tell us.

Just a few words of caution to keep disappointment at bay! I tend to preach about soils and pots for us northern gardeners, but I do so with good reason and good intention! :-)

Good grief, that's a lot of amaryllises! I only wish I had room for that many. What window space I do have is occupied by my other houseplants. What I like to say is, "I really wish I had room for that plant, but if I had the room I'd already have another plant there!"

I used to grow all sorts of common houseplant types... but within the last couple of years, I've turned my focus to bulbs. Most of my former houseplants found new homes before we moved to where we are now, so I started my plant collection here with a clean slate. The only plants I brought with me were my Minerva bulb, an Apple Blossom bulb, an African Violet, and one or two other small plants.

All the wonderful Amaryllids and other plants I have now were all gained within the last 4 years, and I've completely focused collecting and growing on bulbs. You'd be surprised how many pots can be stuffed into a window alcove! Add a few lights, and you've got a jungle!
