OK Tim, below are some of the questions I addressed from Leslie in LA. Leslie,mowing and weed eating the new shoots works best for us. We control our 153 species by doing this and have do so for many years. The bamboo rhizomes will grow in several directions underground looking for energy and sun light. When the rhizome buds are aborted ( mowed or kicked) and prevented from their energy and sunlight mission that rhizome will slowly die over a period of several years. In other words the root will grow outward and put up shoots or canes. When all these are mowed for up to three years that rhizome will die back to the point of the last cane that is supplying energy to it. Bamboo is a grass and persistent, but not magical. It will grow where you let it and there are proven ways to control it very easy. The Japanese and Chinese have lived and loved bamboo for thousands of years. They grow it on thousands of acres and in small 100 square foot court yards. You should visit a bamboo farm and see first hand how bamboo grows and there are several down your way. Moso does grow to over 70 feet as there are mature groves of Moso on Avery Island, Abbeville and several other cities in LA. Any knowledgeable bamboo grower knows the huge Moso that grows through out the southeast including LA. The Moso growing in LA is second only to the Fant clone of Moso that started it all in Anderson, S.C. This clone can be seen at: ANDERSON GROVES DIRECTIONS Directions: Take exit 19 off I85 towards Anderson (US 76, US 25 and Clemson Blvd.) in about 7 miles Clemson Blvd. changes to N. Main Street. The bamboo maintained by the SEC is located at the back of the cemetery. I am sure you know where Avery Island is and it would be a great site to visit and see large Moso. Roger Sr. I have two more questions. Your website suggests controlling bamboo by mowing, or by kicking over the newly emerging canes. I like this idea - it may work well for me. But I'm confused. If I mow/kick over canes in a 30-foot zone around my grove, wouldn't the rhizomes eventually continue travelling underground (past the kicked-over/mowed culms) until they got beyond the 30-foot zone (and into my neighbor's yard)? Second question: I really like the moso bamboo. Does it really grow to 75' in the southeast? (I live in zone 8, south Louisiana). One website said the average height in the southeast is 30 feet -which would actually be better for me, where I'd like to put it. (I have hard, dry clay soil.) There were no signs of an animal scrapping dirt over the bird to that pretty much rules out cats and dogs. I hadn't considered beetles but that is a possibility. It probably was some type of insect now that I think about it more. Tony, seeing that bird dragged halfway into the ground did remind me of that movie! It's been years since I last saw it on TV but I've seen it more times then I can remember. Marcia, thanks for the reassurance. I didn't really think it was a rattler since I've eliminated from my yard most of the type of areas that rattlers prefer to live in like brush/wood piles and the such. Plus the area I found the bird in is really open with nothing but short grass growing there. Not the kind of place most snakes like to hang around. Some people a couple blocks over found some pygmy rattlers in their horse barn once, and my cat brought home a live coral snake once but that was years ago. No one has encountered a venomous snake around here for years. Plenty of non-venomous snakes though! I did wonder if the culprit might be some type of blind snake that lives it's entire life underground. In the past, we have found some of the pink snakes that look kind of look like fishing lures when we've been digging in the yard. I didn't think they got big enough the consider going after a bird though, even a small bird.

Hi Ann, Here is a pic of my 1 year old H. carnosa cutting growing on a trellis. After I got it started, it just knew what to do. I rarely have to attach a vine, no dragonfly clips needed. I like it b/c it's easy to look for peduncles (not that I have witnessed that yet). Hi Carolyn, I have a KQ growing on a trellis too. It has way to many unruly vines. It's still not my favorite hoya, but this way I can at least tolerate it. (Where's the pics of your new hoya? Please post) Maid~

Well, depending where you are in Oklahoma, I could help you clean up by allowing you to give me a Mysore Mulli (lol). Frankly, my windowsills are about full (for this winter), but I won't have a lot of small hardy stuff overwintering in them next year. There's an orchid show and sale tomorrow night...and I am afraid I must go. I wonder how my sales resistance is doing, and where I put it. I haven't seen much sign of sales resistance since I moved. Having moved into a new house, I had lots of planting outdoors I wanted to do, and money being tight, I opted for buying cheap small plants of some and nursing them on. Thus, I have crinums, clumping bamboo, terrestrial orchid, a dianthus, and a hardy lantana in my windows bulking up before they can safely be put outside in a couple months. Of course, the fact that I ordered them in December from Florida, and they were in active growth had something to do with them coming inside too.
