I have three running species in a 6 x 60 raised bed. Rhizome pruning has kept everything in check so far. On one side there is no irrigation and it is hard clay. I'm not going to prune that side this year and see if anything even shoots. Other side is lawn w/o irrigation. I rhizome prune in the fall and I've had a couple shoots in the spring. I just go back and reprune that area and mow the shoots. While digging a drainage ditch about six feet from the bed, I dug up one dead rhizome that had been pruned in an earlier year. It had no feeder roots and had never sent up shoots. In my climate, this regime seems to be sufficient.

First off, to answer your question if you plant a plant that significantly impacts your nieghbors then you could be in trouble for it. Now, regarding your situation, if the land is actually your back yard then the development is very much illegal, if its your land then you can go out an bulldoze the buildings down, then send the bill to whomever built them, however, I get the feeling that you bought property in a new development and that you bought it for the surroundings that you did not buy. If you were up against park or something zoned for different use then it shouldn't have been used, but a reasonable person should be able to tell that if you buy into a development that abuts and area that is undeveloped then chances are the undeveloped area will be developed soon. Thats how development work, even manhattan was once very sparsely populated. Its important to remember that if you like the screen of greenery that is behind a prospective property that you should asertain as to weather it will be around for a while after you purchase the land or not, Idealy you want to either purchase a portion of the forrest behind you or have it locked up in a national forrest or a park or landtrust. Now, them dumping on your property is a differnt matter, if they don't use chemicaqls on there lawn then personally I would welcome the additional compostables,however if there lawn abuts yours and they just dump on your side of the fence without your permission then something does need to happen. I'll bet that if you have a ferrest border with them or a bamboo grove that they will dump into it, and if you dislike them you should check often and give them guff afterwords.

Hi dottyinduncan, For Phyllostachys, dig a trench 6-8 inches deep, 10-12 inches if you are overly paranoid. A shovel width is sufficient, wider if you wish. As the bamboo grows rhizome you will see them breaking ground/poking through into the trench. Simply cut them off before they re-enter the ground. Semiaurundinarias will usually run deeper so allow a few inches extra for them. A couple of real nice Phyllostachys that don't grow rhizomes as fast as some of the others are Phyllostachys viridis 'Robert Young' and 'Houzeau', both very attractive and both relatively slow runners (in our climate). Both have a long branching habit so allow adequate space. Moso would be another consideration as it is slow slow slow.

Many of these people at AIG were hired and promise a bonus for a specific job. They did their job and are entitled to that bonus. They are no longer working at AIG, but because of so many threats to them and their families cannot get work in other places. It is NOT their fault. If your were hired for a one time situation and then found out could not get your bonus and have to take your children out of school, leave the area you too would feel bitter too. We need to look at the whole picture and listen to the other side. How about the oil companies. Mobil Oil made the biggest profit ever and yet the price of gasoline, food, materials and other items are going up. Yes they got their bonus also. We all need to investigate what the real story is, not just what the media and the politicians want us to hear. Look around you and find out why many small and median size businesses are failing. Are they failing because of money, or not knowing how to run the business, charging too much, not enough help, taxes, people stealing items and not being punished, etc We need to stop blaming every one else for our own problems. We must assume responsibility for our own mistakes, and stop expecting the Government to do everything for us.
