Cinnamon Vine (aka Chinese Yam, Shan Yao, etc.)

I am think to plant cinnamon vine for its edible tuber. But I don't know which variety I should acquire. Cinnamon vine is also known as Chinese Yam, Shan Yao, or ýé.

Is "Dioscorea Opposita" same as "Dioscorea Batatas"? According to some of the article I read, D. Opposita has the edible tuber. I am not sure whether D. Batatas has same tuber.

Any comment is welcome! Thank you very much.

I also read that D. alata is edible. Where are you getting edible yam? I see lots of people growing them but I don't think they are the edible kind.

Dioscorea Batatas is the Latin name of Chines Yam.
There are two species of Dioscorea Batatas, one with leaves opposite to each other, the tubers of which are edible. The other variety has leaves in alternate position and is poisonos - not edible.
Seeds are available at www.horizonherbs.com.You may find tubers at Japanes or Chines grocery stores.

    Chaman,

Thank you very much for the information. I ordered the Wild Yam (Chinese) from the website you provided. Hopefully they will grow well in Texas.
