Black Sugar Maple
Comments (3)I have a tree that I was sure was a sugar maple but colored an OK yellow at best. I had someone take a look look at it and they though it might be a black maple also. The local sugar maple generally have great color in contrast to my tree. If you are purchasing a maple for its fall color my advice would be to purchase it when it is in fall color or to purchase a named cultivar known for great fall color....See MoreSugar Maple vs Norway Maple ID
Comments (0)The most magnificent display of color in all of the kingdom of plants is the autumnal foliage of the trees of North America. Over them all .......rise the colors of one tree, the Sugar Maple. A Natural History of Trees by Donald C. Peattie Around this time of year we really appreciate the Sugar Maple because of the fall color. New posters confuse this tree with Norway Maple. The introduction of Norway Maple to colonial America is credited to one of my all time heroes, John Bartram in 1756. It took quite a while but I have come to forgive him for this :)Brilliant colors of SM can be had especially if foliage is exposed to the sun. Wings of seed not as large or broad spreading as NM. A broken leaf vein or seed releases white sap from NM during the growing season.Notice the sharply pointed & conical buds of SM. NM buds are broad and blunt tipped. SM bark of older trees develops long, gray plates. NM bark is more closely ridged & furrowed with age. These are good traits to use for winter ID. Observe the trees repeatedly and throughout the year and you can pick out the differences from a distance. One positive for NM, it makes great firewood....See MoreDo Sugar Maples not like wind and clay?
Comments (29)Beng, Like many types of trees, there are areas that Acer saccharum (sugar maple) may grow but not in such a way to become 'the perfect yard specimen'. According to Missouri edu: and other sources, the tree likes well drained soil that's acid to slightly alkaline. I don't know your situation but would imagine trees growing in wetter than normal locations or higher ph soil than what it likes, or even trees with certain natural genetics could possibly be 'duds' when it comes to fall colors. You did suggest flood plains earlier in the thread. Most of the sugar maples growing in the woods that I've noticed are at least a bright orange on it's best years and still somewhat appreciable in coloring at it's worst. Of coarse, there are most likely sugars here that don't color well and I haven't noticed because they just don't show up well from the road when driving 60mph. :-)...See MoreSugar maple species vs. cultivar in south.
Comments (6)I have grown the southern sugar maple from Sheffield's seeds here in Arkansas. They have grown really well for me in the nursery bed. It is taking them a while to get good and established when planted out. They just finished year two out in the field/yard with no fatalities this year. I lost a few last year. Edit: when I say really well, I mean 4-5' after two years in the mostly shaded nursery bed with one individual growing above the roof line reaching over 10'. A bird broke the leader early summer (it was still very tender growth) and it responded by doubling it's height once it began replacing the leader a couple weeks later. I planted the big one in the front yard last fall but it didn't grow much this year (as expected)....See Morehairmetal4ever
