Sorry to hear about your dilemna... I don't think you can keep the bulbs for the next season so I would try to avoid this option. Some ideas: 1) Consider donating them to a charitable organization. May be at least you could get a charity deduction? 2) If giving them away is an option, consider contacting your local garden club and see if they could use them for town beautification projects. You could also contact daycares or nursery schools as they may be interested in them for projects and these are often underfunded. 3) Give to family and friends. May be they have beds that the bulbs could go in without work? May be some could help you plant in your yard for free bulbs? 4) Save some to force inside. If you have an unheated garage or cellar (like a bulkhead), you could chill them appropriately then force them inside. You can water force or put in soil. You can chill in the refridgerator also if no fruit is stored there. I have an extra fridge that I wrap the bulbs in cut up brown paper bags. I label the paper bags with the date put in the fridge and variety. Then you can take out and force them later at the appropriate time based on the variety. I just read in the Boston Globe by Carol Stocker also mentions that you can put the bulbs in pots and put them outside and cover with a heavy layer of bark mulch. If you put the pots outside directly exposed the bulbs will freeze and die. Here is a link that might be useful: Carol Stocker Article (free registration req'd)

Looking good Vera!! You mention the snapdragons... I sowed more but yesterday I went to clean out one of the flower beds and pulled an old Snap out of the ground. Lots of resistance and when I had the roots I noticed they were still nice and plump. I'm leaving the others in to see if anything will come of them. Just trimming the tops today. We'll see. I have no sprouts of the Nicotiana. Always thought they sprouted early, but your experience shows me that's not true, so I'll wait a bit more. Turnip... We grew some last year as they are a favourite of DD's, but when we pulled them from the ground they had little holes made by insects in them. Yuck! Any idea? Couldn't eat them.

That is a big improvement in your foundation bed! I like the little fence/trellis, hope that Jasmine doesn't grow too tall. Personally I would separate out the Echinacea and Salvia seedlings, although it's not absoluately necessary, you have several good healthy plants there. Some seedlings do well growing in a HOS, some do better when they have their own space. Now look at all that grass and sun you have to make new beds. I am very jealous (have large trees on my lot)!

Some nice sun is out today. Sunday looks like it will be approaching 90 here and I checked brooklyn's forecast and its looking the same for you too. My plants are finally recovering from being indoors with a lot showing nice new growth. I should also have my new pindo and sabal domingensis just in time for the warmer weather. My chamaedorea microspadix should also come in the mail by then, Im really looking forward to planting it in the ground. I hope it can handle it (with protection of course)! My windmill palms in the ground have finished pushing up there new leaf and are quickly pushing another spear. I havent seen them grow this quickly ever and its still early. Enjoy the warmth, Im sure your palms will! Nychuck, I think the NY botanical gardens has a needle palm, but I havent heard of a windmill palm there (I have never been there). You might be talking about the windmill palm at the brooklyn botanical gardens. That went unprotected this year and unfortunately died. I think that might have to do with being in an exposed spot though since my windmill palms saw very similar temps for the same duration and one of the 2 went unprotected and both did fine. All the unprotected one had was a frost cloth which flew off before the worst of winter arrived (so techincally it didnt really do anything for it). I was completely covered in snow 3 times this past winter and lightly coated with snow on 2 or 3 other occasions but its in a great microclimate on the southwest side of the fence. Are you growing any cold tolerant palms outside? This past winter was the first for mine and I was surprised to see them handle it so well. Thats why this year Im trying less cold tolerant palms and pushing there limits! Good luck!

I try to get as many seedlings in the ground that can handle some cold as soon as possible, because once it gets warm (like now) the jugs start popping faster...to avoid fatigue, whatever I feel comfortable about planting out early GETS planted out early.
I've already eaten my first harvest of lettuces (and boy was it good!)

The poppies in particular seemed kinda stalled out for a while, but their taking off. Catchfly was another one that seemed kinda stalled out (I'm thinking it might be cause the soil is kinda crappy where I put it). But they are holding their own and starting to get their first set of true leaves.

(the kitty butt and kitty head in pics 5 and 10 are Mario...he is always the first one to run outside to walk with me in the yard, even if he was sleeping. And if I have a camera, he's always ready to pose :-) )

Another wow from me too! Your plants looks wonderful. Hoping my five spot babies grow to be healthy like yours. Love the flower on it! Was going to ask you about your pretty black cat... how sweet that he follows you like that.

I'm thinking seriously of pinching the blooms off the Five-Spot, only because I don't know if they bloom throughout the season or not. It's kinda early (and their leaves are kinda yellow). I figure it might make the plant a little more hardy if I pinch the blooms. But then, if I pinch the blooms, does that mean that when they're ready to bloom again the weather will be too hot for them?
This is my first year growing it. So I have no clue. Anybody know the deal on this (before I perseverate myself into a hole)?

and one more thing,

kitty butt is cute enough, but Id really prefer to see the kitty's face>! Im allergic, so I cant keep one, but I think that cats are like animal-art. I mean, Ive never seen an ugly CAT. Dogs on the other hand, while they are mostly all lovable, every so often you find one of em is just plain ole butt-ugly! rofl!

Applause, applause! I admit to a little jealousy here - my WS lettuce didn't do all that well this year - but my peas did ok - I planted them in a raised bed garden I left for our new house owners. Hope to join you next year with the home grown lettuce.

Your plants look healthy and great - lots of blooms soon - love that monkshood! Kudos!

Yup, fenugreek is food. You can eat the leaves and the seeds. I love the leaves on them...probably one of the most interesting along with Lupine and Jacob's Ladder leaves.

Doris, how true! Cats are "animal art", all them, big and small! It's always amazed me how they're built, sleek, strong and flexible! The pure power of their hind legs... their hunting ability and then on top of that... so darn cute! Yep! Animal art!

Everything looks great Linda!! I always think that we are approximately in the same zone (upstate New York?) but I haven't been able to put anything in yet. We had frost last night and I lost almost all of my radish plants, even though I covered them, and we're having frost again tonight. I am still hesitant to plant out my containers, and it's the first year I have my beds ready!! Cant win!BTW, once you get Euphorbia marginata, you will never have to plant them again. I have been growing and collecting seeds for several years and somehow, I always find seedlings, so I just pot up a few and plant them where I want them. I love them with Calliopsis.

I always think the same thing.
But I think my being so close to Lake Ontario puts me in a kind of microclimate, or at least changes the manner in which temps affect plants in Fall and Spring. We had a freeze warning last night, but I didn't cover anything (not even the buckets of lettuce, although I did put those in a corner close to the house). Everything looks as green as it did the day before. I also wonder if everything being so moist from all the rain we had over the weekend helped keep them safe.
I DID make sure I didn't plant anything new yesterday, because I wasn't so sure they'd make it, moist soil or not.

(That's good to hear about the Euphoria marginata-- this is my 3rd year WSing them and the first year I have sprouts. Must've just got the right batch of seeds this time, or something.)

That lettuce looks delicious. I love salads. Great photos.
The one you can't remember looks like dianthus to me. The second one does look like sweet william.

Nemophila is a cool weather plant here, flowering in the spring and burning up when the weather gets hot.
