I had no pinks. Cindee A sent me some seeds and two small bulb-lets, Candy Floss and a bulb-let from Lora labelled Lil Pinky. Candy floss did not survive, the Lil Pink bloomed last year as well as this year.

May be it is climatic change, because I see no pink in the blooms of both years.

Very lovely flower Arif..I would say this year's color is more to the coral pink side, last year's is a bit deeper..but some might say salmon(y)..which is about the same.. with less orange..? Whatever color you call it, it's very very nice.

My bulbs under the live oak trees are the first to bloom, as they don't lose their leaves in the winter. (They are protected by the warmth of the oak.) We had an early spring and the rest of the bulbs got leaves before flowers this year, which is very, very nice. I just don't like to see flowers on bulbs that have no leaves. Doesn't look right. So it was nice to have leaves on all of the bulbs this year before the flowers started blooming.

I take my photos with a Polaroid digital camera, upload them to my computer, fix and resize them in Adobe Photoshop, and use PhotoBucket to upload them to the forum. I usually make the pixel size around 300 or 400 a side, somewhere in there... then I fix the contrast or whatever needs fixing, sharpen them up, and save for the web. Pretty simple, but somewhat time consuming... going through all the little steps involved so the pictures come out good for internet viewing and easy loading. I'd love to see your collection of pictures, too, soultan, but there's no rush... someday when you're bored and have nothing to do... (ya right! like that's gonna happen!) Getting the pictures taken is half the battle... getting them uploaded and ready for the web is the other half... if we can help in any way, let us know... we'll certainly try!

I am SO far behind in re-potting my bulbs... I've got several that have outgrown their current homes, and need upgrades... I've also got seedlings that need to be re-potted before coming indoors for the winter! My oldest bulb is a Minerva... I've had her for about 8 years, which makes her around 10 years old, or older, since I bought her as a fairly large adult. I've only re-potted her 3 times in all those years, but I do top-dress her pot every year with fresh soil. I just re-potted her last fall, and she was pretty pot-bound! She currently resides in a 12 inch pot, along with her baby. Her baby is getting quite large, and I think I need to re-pot the two again. I really don't want to separate them... is there any reason why they should be split up? Or do you think it's fine to allow bulbs to colonize in pots? What will happen to the mother bulb eventually? Most of the bulbs that I did re-pot this year had nice roots... a couple had some rotted roots, and those were put in smaller pots because they hadn't grown well. The only bulbs I took outdoors this year were a pot of Sprekelia bulbs, and a pot of Lycoris radiata. I lost one of the Sprekelia bulbs due to too much rain... when I took them out of their pot, the dying bulb had completely rotten roots, a rotten basal plate, and the rot had just begun to infect the lower portion of the bulb, itself. There was an abundance of small pill-bug looking insects in the pot, but I'm not sure if they were eating healthy growth or rotting plant and root material. The other bulbs in the pot were very healthy and had beautiful root systems. I washed them off and put them in smaller pots with fresh soil. They are currently indoors, under lights. The Lycoris appear to be growing fine, and will be sprayed for bugs, then brought indoors. Like Andy, I treat most of my bulbs the same. My regimen includes checking each pot every couple of days to see if it needs watering, watering those that require it and leaving those that don't until next check... I fertilize with a semi-weak solution of Miracle-Gro liquid about every other time I water... I leach the pots about every couple of months, just to make sure excess salts aren't building up... and, I keep the pots free of dead leaves and excess layers of dead bulb tissue. I also top-dress about once a year. I could plant my bulbs outdoors every spring, and then lift them as the weather gets cool in late summer, but I'm too paranoid of insect damage and poor weather, not to mention all the extra work it would be! I'm sure it would healthier for the bulbs, especially for their root systems, but unless I move to a warmer climate, my bulbs will be container grown. Since this is only my second autumn with many of these bulbs, and they're grown indoors in slightly less than ideal conditions, I can only comment on what I've learned and observed so far. From what I've experienced thus far, Hippeastrums, at least most of the hybrids, are rather adaptable and fairly resilient. Even though improper culture may result in missed blooms, the bulbs seem to grow just fine when neglected somewhat. Some varieties rest while others grow, and the only thing they really can't stand is being over-watered! The healthiest root systems I have are on bulbs that are planted in a very loose medium. The medium is almost a bonsai type of mixture, containing perlite, pine bark fines and turface. It drains almost immediately upon watering, and though I find I must water more often, I find that the bulbs grow better, have much healthier roots, and look better and happier! I'd like to switch all of my bulbs to this mix, and will do so when I finally get all the ingredients together to make a large batch. When the roots are healthy, the plant is healthy... in my short experience, I have found that a loose, well-draining mix coupled with watering only when the medium is dry, makes for healthier roots. I have bulbs of all different sizes in pots of all different sizes, some being rather pot-bound... but they're all growing well, and appear to be happy... I think it's the medium and the watering that account for decent roots.

Greetings my friend Arif!! I agree your flower color looks most like a Coral-Pink shade. Coral tends to have a bit of orange added to the Pink. Lora Pointer's original Lil Pinky seems to be more bright pink in this photo of hers.

I was actually coming in to tell everyone how excited I am that I have what I believe to be Lora's Lil Pinky on my desk and it's blooming for the very first time!! Amazing yours bloomed a whole year ahead of mine. But then, the 3 remaining seedlings that I have are all different sizes...so the genetics must shift in color and size per seed? I don't know for sure. Mine tends to have a more bright or deep pink with a white throat! The back side mid ribs look like in Lora's photo.I will take photos tomorrow as she opens more.

Pretty blooms Arif and Cindee! How nice you both have siblings. I'll contribute some pinks if someone is sending another package. I still have a few too many Rozettas from last year.

I presumed that one I got was a bulb-let and not a seedling. It must be a seedling, as the throat is not the same. Seedlings rarely come true.

Sorry Arif, for the confusion but I got only seeds from Lora. I believe the Candy Floss was the bulblet. Alas, my Candy Floss did not survive either! DANG-I forgot my camera today. My lil pinky looks a lot like Donau on a much more petite scale and with a distinct whitish star forming on the inner midribs. I do not remember who Lora said Pinky's parents were. I do love mine, though especially because it came from a dear person. If anyone sees or talks to Lora anymore, please let her know we are thinking about her.

darn, I have no double pollen...I can't figure where to find it on doubles.

As I remember now the seedlings we have are from seeds with her Lil Pinkie as the Mother and pollen from Double Record. What I sent you were either seedlings or bulblets of these seedlings. They, the original seeds, started producing tiny bulblets off very early before they even produced leaves. Does this make sense? pics to follow.

Hey Cindee, the pollen on doubles like Lady Jane is tucked into the side of a petal. Sometimes there's just a bit and sometimes there's a bunch. I might be able to get a little off Double Dream (this one was particularly stingy with pollen). Let me know if you'd like me to try (I'll just send you the whole petal).

I've noticed with my seedlings - particularly Red Lion x Blossom Peacock - that they are prone to producing bulblets very early. Strange, but oh well. I guess they just like company.

What was Little Pinky's mom?

My Alfresco blooms actually have anthers with pollen. Some of the petals have pollen as well, but many had actual anthers. I am excited because I love the form of Alfresco and the scent!

I have some Red Lion x Jewel, Exotica x Jewel, and Lady Diana x Jewel babies that should bloom next year. Will be interesting to see what they look like!

Well here is my Lil Pinkie daughter or as I understand Lora's "Lil Pinkie x Double Record" SHE IS SO PRECIOUS AND BRIGHT! (Oh God, I looked at this photo and absolutely love it. Looks like she is hugging the purple hyacynth!)

I have to say Arif your color may be a bright pink like mine, with the naked eye...I am just having trouble getting the camera to capture true colors. Mine also comes out more a coral shade, but in person mine is a deep/bright PINK shade rather than coral. I just can't get the camera to tell the truth. I am pollinating one of these with Trentino(a trumpet)...what do you all think about that mix? Arif, it is such a joy to be enjoying sisters of the same created by Lora-God Bless ya girl, wherever you are for making friends and happiness happen!

Alana, thanks for your offer. I imagine my blooms will not last long eanough to make it happen. However, if you have a Rozetta to spare I would gladly partake. Maybe Arif can make us a list of what he would like and I can again make a package for him with all our contributions!! Also, alana I know knot what Lora did to create the original Jewel, but I found her email and am going to ask her to stop by!

Kristi, your Jewel combos sound WONDERFUL! I hope they all take!! Please keep us posted. I have a Jewel, I have not tried sexing it...lol
