Collecting seed from forget-me-nots

There is a very nice stand of forget-me-nots down the road from where I live (in the wild - sort of ) and I would like to collect some seeds for ws'ing next year (or maybe I should just scatter the seeds right where I want them this Spring?). Can anyone tell me when's the right time to collect the seeds. Are they tiny? Difficult to collect? What's your experience ws'ing them?

I have broadcast seeds from dying plants that I cut off at soil level and now have a beautiful large patch of forget me nots coming up in my semi-shade garden. I think they are very easy to do this way. If you want to actually collect them I think all you would need is a pie dish or something flat with sides and just shake the seeds out onto it. I don't know how they keep. I seeded as soon as the seeds would shake out. Maybe someone else will know how well they keep.

Thanks Bonny. Sounds like a good idea. I'll "steel" a couple of plants when they die back.

I found the seed pack and the name is 'firmament' heirloom variety. Sorry I don't know the other names. I did get them in the ground a little late this year. On the pack it says to pick the old blooms to encourage side branching but doesn't say if they'll bloom. Are the sprouts you're getting the result of dropping to the ground? thank you... G_M

Here is the direct link to forget-me-not on that page, Jspece; it is listed by the common name, not the botanical. It looks like they want about a penny per seed. Otherwise, I couldn't find seeds available anywhere. Very strange. I didn't wade through eBay, but maybe Glenda can provide some links to those. A lot of places selling plants, but they seem pretty expensive. Good luck in your quest! Brenda

Lots of seeds to harvest on that forget-me-not, which as ken says is done for the season. Cut it back - it'll shortly turn into a really dark, crispy, dead looking thing - but scatter the cuttings wherever you might want them to sprout. Very welcome plant in my gardens - I have them everywhere and they're just picking up real steam here now. Easy to pull up if they land somewhere inconvenient.
