Dwarf Flying Dragon Citrus Trees

I live in the Phoenix Arizona area and want to purchase some Dwarf Citrus to plant in containers, I read that Flying Dragon is the best rootstock for dwarf citrus. First can you tell me the best place to purchase this? Also how do they do in our high ph soil if I decide down the road to place in the ground? Also what is the best way to water these trees I know that we have high ph in our water and the flying dragon likes a lower ph of under 7. Will these trees grow well in this area and have good tasting fruit? What is the best container soil or organic matter for the flying dragon dwarf citrus?

Hi Mag123,

Flying Dragon is the best rootstock for dwarf citrus trees. It will produce a tree that is about 1/2 regular size with normal sized fruit. This is for a tree planted in the ground. If you are going to grow citrus in containers you may not need to purchase trees grafted onto Flying Dragon because your trees will have limited root volume and will naturally remain small.

For container soil use a mixture of 1/3 manufactured soil. For our climate I like Super Soil potting mix. Combine that with 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 pumice. If you can't find pumice use vermiculite. Don't worry about the pH. Trees planted in the ground are happy with a pH above 8. In a container yours will be much lower. If you want to reduce the pH of the water you use just add 1 tablespoon of vinegar in each gallon of water.

Toni - Thanks. I actually had a couple of sample blister packs of SuperThrive. I placed them in a desk drawer, which subsequently was put into storage. I recently went digging around (looking for the ST) and found the samples basically melted and evaporated. I guess Texas summers are too much. I'm sure the desk was warped too. Benny - I really can't afford it. All my money has (lately) been going to baseball, Cub Scouts and my beer of the month club. Not to mention, diesel is averaging 2.20 per gallon (costs me more than $50 to fill my farm truck). Oh, and I just made the last payment for my son's summer camp, which is more than $4K (but worth every penny for the peace and quiet I will enjoy for the month of July).

Dan, I like Carrizo root characteristics; but for planting in ground it is susceptible to several issues, in particular phytophera, which is not a problem in containers, and wet feet. Volkameriana tends to grow slower and produce fewer and larger fruits. Grapefruits are more tolerant of higher pH; in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, they grow them with 8,5 pH water and 8 pH soils; of course they have to chelated iron at that pH.
