A couple new pics

I continue to experiment with growing H. papilio as an epiphyte. I think due to the stress and being kept in my green house this winter, this one bloomed a bit early.

It's great to see a pot full of plants like that. So much more natural than a single bulb although these plants are very impressive that way. Nice.

That 'air-grown'amaryllis looks very interesting. I suppose it requires lots of humidity, doesn't it? Do you think our climate is suitable for that? Maybe I should try?

Oh thats a zinnia!I grew that variety but it was mixed with another yellow and red that reminded me more of ketchup and mustard than candy!The red and white is sweet. I love them there are so very many varieties of zinnias and the butterflies love them also.The other nice thing is you can just toss the seeds on some fertile soil,water and kapow! Gorgeous flowers!Great to pick. Check out Gurneys seed sale.

You've got red noodles!!!! We are growing those for the first time this year. What do you think of them? I think they are the best. And I just love the flowers, don't you? Your flowers look great. I really like that celosia. When I was a little kid my mother made a 3ft by 3ft garden for each of us and we each got to pick our own pack of seeds. Mine was a bright pink moss rose, my brother picked dianthus, but I was always more than a bit envious of my big sisters choice of celosia in her garden. :) Lynda Here is a link that might be useful: Red noodle bean flower pics and me raving over how good the beans are

Thanks guys. The donkey isn't really a topiary. Its a wire form of a donkey with two plant holders that look like where saddle bags would be but Patty and I stuffed him, lol. You see the two white pots with the geraniums? Thats the saddle bags. We stuffed a long planter with ivy through his behind to fill up his belly and his nose is the orange pot with a lime sweet potatoe vine in it, lol. The statue was part of a water fountain and she sat on the edge of a huge seashell but it broke and my friend gave me the lady. She is in front of the lotus tub. I sunk it in the ground like a mini pond and put the little fence around it to keep critters away I hope. I am out of potting soil and need mulch. Hopefully I can get to the store tomorrow and spend my winnings from the tournament today. My good friend Sandy came in first, my husband was second and I was third. Only because John wouldn't give me the net when I had a huge fish right at the side of the boat and he got off while he was B.S ing, lol. Thats ok. I'm glad my friend won and I have to let him keep some of his man pride once in a while, lol. We had a great time today and around a hundred people showed up. It is turning into quite a big yearly event that we started. This is the 3rd year we have done it.

Palms I'm growing this year

Hi. Seems like the real trick is to have palm plants large enough to withstand a cold dip. I had a small multiple roebellini and Queen palm die from 2 nights at 17F. If you can plant palms with about 5" of trunk or more, all the better. You might want to look into Brahea armata. I planted one last Summer and it was untouched by the cold. It has about 8" of trunk but is costly at that size. Chamerops humilis does very well in the desert too. I have a massive Canary Island Date in my front yard and it covers half of the yard. They do pretty well in the desert as well.

Hi Patrick! It's Papilio time...finally! Its always so ineteresting seeing your "Papilios in a Slab". And those Limas are awesome!

How is the variegated Papilio doing?

Hmm,, My variegated papilio went into a serious decline last fall. Not sure the cause. Last weekend I un-potted it, cleaned it up and repotted it. It's lready started to show a new leaf.

Interesting way to Hang a Hipp.or would it be Hang a Pap? Great pic and I hope you're successful with this way to grow it Patrick.Keep the thread updated ok? Peace,Mark

Patrick,

Is that cedar mulch that you are using on the top of the soil in your pots? I have not bee mulching the top soil of my potted hippies and probably need to since weeds are popping up like crazy!

I also wish the try the method that you are using on your Papilio. How often do you water them or do you just let nature do its thing?
