My first 60 containers were with Hyponex! Then I read where it isn't a good soil. However, I have sprouts in most of those containers. I am using the rest of the bags along with ProMix. If you have more seeds, try them in a different potting mix, but wait a bit to see if the first ones do indeed sprout. This is my first year and I am addicted and the folks on this forum are enablers! Joyce

Thanks to all who replied to my question. I read both the WS FAQs and SS thread. I honestly never thought I had to cover anything I planted outside when the weather was nice - just let Mother Nature do her job. Now, I'll put the stuff I had inside, outside with a cover. I especially liked the FAQ "Poster Suggestions for Flats from Recycleables" and also, the suggestions posted to this thread regarding containers. I needed to know what to start saving now in order to WS as economically and environmentally as possible. What wonderfully invented ideas people had. I had asked about coffee cans a few months back but did not get a resounding "Good Idea" so I guess I'll put those in the cycle bin and stick to the more widely used plastics that light can get through. Great to hear from my New England and Canadian neighbors - we can all commiserate together about all this rain (what was THAT last night?). Also, thanks to all for the "Welcomes" to the forum. I am using pro-mix for professionals that I buy from a greenhouse or a good garden center. To sow regular perennials or annuals, I use only pro-mix but when I sow more delicate plants such as alpine and rock garden plants, I use pro-mix and add grit or small vermiculite, half and half. The mixture allows a perfect drainage and it is easier when comes the time to divide the seedlings and transplant. Sometimes, especially for sowing paeonies, I use only pure sand. Using soil is dangerous as the seedlings will have more tendancy to damp off. If you need more help, you can contact me. I have used the moisture control Miracle Grow and had excellent results. I think those are problematic for regions with very moist climate or heavy spring rains. If you have an option of a potting mix that doesn't have the moisture gel, go with that, but I would choose any ProMix variety over other brands for the nice, fine texture. Martha
