Hello, newbie here from the Cottage Gardening forum!

You all have me convinced that this WS thing is the way to go! I've read through the FAQ's and printed 22 pages for reading at my leisure. I've read and re-read and it almost sounds too good to be true. I've direct-sown seed a couple of times with success and enough to know the satisfaction of growing from seed. Then, I wander over here to your forum and see the pictures of the FLATS of flowers that you grew OUTSIDE during the winter without the hassle of lights, stands, finding space, etc. and I think THIS IS FOR ME! I am pumped people! I'm going to try my hand at a couple of flats this summer to get some practice then I'm jumping in with both feet this winter.

Any chance anyone would be willing to trade seed for postage to help a newbie get started? Can't wait to read more and look at more pictures. Very inspiring and such a nice group of people!

Welcome Stephanie. I was new here in February and feel like an old timer already. The people here are quite nice.

I was the recipient of many, many generous seed donors. Pretty much all of those seeds are planted. I do, however, have some warm weather annual seeds which would have a running shot at bloom if planted right away. I am referring to things like marigolds, zinnias, cosmos, cleome, etc.

some of the taller plants are strong enough to stay up by themselves without support. If you are concerned about tall things flopping, then just plant them closer together than they should be (looks nice and full too) and then plant some shorter things in front and around them so that they can support the taller plants. If you are just planting annuals in a certain area then I wouldn't worry about the spacing that is suggested on the seed pack. I will usually plant about half or just over the distance suggested if I want a really full look in an area. If the suggested spacing is say 18 inches, then I will plant anywhere from maybe 10 to 12 inches, depending on the expected bushiness of the plant. Perennials of course are going to be a more permanent plant in an area and you should leave 'growing room'. Probably not a perfect way of doing things :) but it works for me. Others may have other ideas for achieving the nice full look. gg

Interesting, Blueangel. I am wondering if the painting may be one by W. Collins, R.A. 1788-1847, who painted sentimental rural landscapes featuring animals and children. One of his paintings is "Selling the Pet Lamb" which is what caused me to wonder if it was the same artist? I'm still singing the praises of the CG seed swap! I started some seeds, and now am successfully growing, nicotiana, datura, sweet peas ( thank you Sweet Pea Queen Edna), japanese morning glory, nigella and many more flowers for the first time. I'm even giving hydrangea a shot! Thanks, Sharon! If it weren't for this forum, I'm not sure I would have even attempted such a great variety of seeds. As you can tell, I am thrilled by the results! I've added more roses, thanks to our band of merry rose-enablers....and you know who you are! :-) I've learned so much about different climates and gardening styles. I'm still in awe over Debbie's picture of lilacs and oranges growing side by side! I think that's amazing. :-) The changes are not limited to my garden, either. Thanks to Eduarda and Dawn's encouragement, I taught myself to knit. Courtesy of the bead board diva ( Diana ), I have fallen in love with bead board and now have added more to my house. There are many more examples of how this forum has been a source of encouragement and enlightenment. I thank you all for being a source of inspiration! Marilyn

Newbie to Garden Forum and looking forward to fall swap

Jeff, Mom and I will definitely be at the fall swap. We've been talking a lot about what we're going to bring. :) Eventually, I am going to have some very nice perennials to divide and share. Grasses too. I was pretty much all irises this time, just because that's what I had that was share-able. But perennials are really my main thing. :) I'm also considering trying to layer some of my shrubs to be able to share those. I bought some Kumson Forsythia this year, and I've got two branches layered to see if it will work for me. We were talking about how much we learned at this swap about how to do things, and what we will do differently next time. I want to do a better job of labeling plants with photos. Can you tell I had so much fun I'm still not over it? :D

You folks are trying to reel in another victim, aren't you? Same thing happened to me a few winters ago. Right now I am having seedlings coming out of my ears and I cannot plant them out fast enough. The weather is not cooperating either. It turned so hot so fast those babies are growing like mad until the roots are bound together. Whine..whine..whine...:-P

Welcome to the mad house, Steph. If you still need more seeds, check back in fall. I will have plenty. In fact, I have a lot of plants to share, but it's too hot now to ship them out.
I can ship plants for postage in fall, if you are interested. :-)

By the way, Amare- You can certainly do many of the perennials, annuals, pretty much anything! I'm just getting started on my Morning Glories, and I've GOTTA get those sunflowers in!

Watch the moisture & heat levels...as SOON as you see sprouts, get those covers off, since it's likely too warm now to leave covers on at all.
