Here is a link that might be useful: foil tape plant markers

I tried this at the beginning of the sowing season - Feb. for me. I took a strip of foil tape, wrapped it around the cut up blind (the long way, so the whole surface was covered) and used a fine point sharpie to "write and engrave" the plant name. Struck them in my jugs and put them outside.

I guess it "worked" in that, yes, I can read the writing (sharpie ink long gone) but it is a lot of trouble to do. I got some paint pens instead and so far, I am loving using them. NO FADE at all. Bought them on ebay for a few bucks, probably cheaper than foil tape if you did the figuring.

Hi duodecad, I used the foil tape and popsicle sticks, both of which I had in the house already. So I wrapped the popsicle sticks with the foil tape, almost like wrapping a present, making sure to completely cover the popsicle stick and seal it tight. Figured that might protec the popsicle stick from getting wet and keep it from rotting so quickly. Then I used a ball point pen to etch the name of the plant in the stick. It seems to have worked pretty well.

Duodecad, if you can get to a Lee Valley, you can buy one of their plant markers to write on your plastic spoons. They will not fade in rain, snow, sleet, or hail and you can transfer them to the earth when you plant out, and re-use the following year. They have mail-order if you are in a rural area.
