trying to revive a tree I thought was dead

I chopped the top of a dwarf lemon tree thinking it was dead. Over the last year a branch grew from the side and more and more growth is coming from the branch.

The branch is horizontal. Is there any way to encourage vertical growth?

If it's still flexible, you can prop it more vertical.

in z5.. may we presume this is an indoor lemon ..

if so .. it is reaching toward the light... or window

the absolute best thing you could do is add supplemental light ABOVE.. so that it reaches upwards.. instead of towards the window ... and then gently guide it up over the next year with a stake.. as previously noted ...

especially in winter ...

now.. do i have to come over there.. and take away your pruning shears????? ...

it will lose its leaves again.. this winter .... that is what deciduous trees do .... and as far as i know.. lemons are ... but wouldnt be surprised if i was told otherwise ...

PS: seed grown or a graft ... if grafted.. there is a chance you may have cut off the good part ....

Alberta is correct Alexa on the catt in bark. Jam the oldest pbulb/rhizome on the edge of the pot so the new growth has room to grow for a couple of years. After repotting a catt, I don't water for a week to let the wounds heal, then resume a regular schedule. You do not have to sterilize your cutting tools between each cut :>) Sterlize after you are finished with the plant. You still need to stabilize the plant in the pot. You don't want the plant wobbling when you move it. If you don't have a rhizome clip, use a couple of stakes (bamboo skewers work great) put one on each side of a pbulb and then use twist ties to tie the stakes together or the pbulb to the stake. Once the new roots grow, you can remove the stakes. And the most important thing to remember, these are tough plants that want to survive regardless of what we do to them. Brooke

You're a zone colder than it's range, so it's probably compost now. You can dig it up and check the roots, but I doubt if there's much hope that it's dormant.

if its all wilted and has to grow new leaves, it might be good to put it in bright shade to help it along. if any of my hibiscus are not doing well, i move them to partial or bright shade until they are start looking better so they don't have to fight the hot sun all day...

I was gifted an asparagus fern - s variety i believe- not sire how to spell. But it only has two or three stems an looks quite sickly. iam wondering if i should try to rehab it or try soaking roots and repotting?

Yeah, its an indoor plant. I didn't think it was reaching for the light because the lights tend to be on the other side of the plant (at least thats the way it was before I added a lamp right above.)

My concern about staking it up is that it wouldn't grow strong on its own and would need the stake there permanently.

All you need do is stake until it holds the position on its own, perhaps several months. Then you remove the stake.
