Blue rose of sharon?

Did this germinate for you?

I did not get any seedlings -- wondering if it is the seeds (from someone's garden) or if they are just hard to grow from seeds.

None of my ROS have sprouted either, it might be early? I'm in cold spot in zone 5. I sure hope I get something!

I have 2 4-year old shrubs. I'll try and save seeds for next year for those interested.

Sodaisycrazy, I had Blue satin Rose of Sharon when I live in Pennsylvania, I don't grow Rose of Sharon down here in the Southeast heat. I had a small yard when I lived up north, so when the seedlings started growing everywhere and I had to weed them out, I wasn't too happy and then I understood what other people would complain about. Try them, they are truly beautiful shrubs.

Spring Meadow's online descriptions of the newer ones they are promoting mention 'Blue Bird' (correctly 'Oiseau Bleu', "blue bird" being a translation into English and not the actual name of the cultivar) being mixed up in the trade. The same will of course become possible with Blue Satin ('Marina') TM at some point, although it is rather early in its history for other introductions to have been put on the market in its place. Bailey nursery has their own blue one that their site says was selected from a block of blue seedlings. So apparently you can sometimes raise seed of a blue one and get a number of additional blue forms. Perhaps this is what happened with 'Oiseau Bleu', seedlings of it being sold as the original clone. Or some other factor like cultural conditions is causing variation in flower tinting and plant behavior.

I swiped some double blue seeds from my neighbor this spring. They were still stuck in the open pods. I sowed them on March 21 and germination started April 25. I have four seedlings out of 12 seeds. I see two more today trying to pop out their seed leaves. I wouldn't give up yet. You may still get sprouts. I think the weather changing so much caused some to sprout early.

I got a blue one germinated, but the white one is doing nothing. Im going to put some new seeds in.

It helps that the seeds came from zone 4 (thanks Barb!) they're pretty tough.

A few years ago, Drippy sent me some seeds and they germinated quite well. Those ROSs now bloom at my DM's home and my DB's home as well. They were over three feet last I saw them. The deers eat them here so I gave them to family gardeners who truly appreciate them. :O)

My purple and white have been up for a while now. The first batch that germinated in January was killed off by February. I think the strong know when to germinate. Last year they took forever.

Blue ROS? I have a huge row of pink/white/purple ones, but no blue. Don't believe I've ever seen that color. Sounds pretty.

Also, I don't believe that ROS necessarily breeds true to the parent color, at least none of mine do. I've been freely sharing them around my neighborhood, too.

Just thought I'd toss in my $0.02.

Missemerald is correct. MOST RoS will not come true. The white and purple are the dominant colors. Blue may be different, but seedlings from a white plant have given me both purple and white.

I think the same thing can be said for any open pollinated species...Heirlooms excluded maybe :)... Happy wintersowing planting..:)) Barb
