I am excited about the possibility of seeds, all right - I have never tried amaryllis crossing or growing from seed.

Keep us posted, for sure. Once you start pollinating, you can't stop...although after this season I will have to. I am running out of space!

I hope the seed will ripen properly. In case it does, I bought a little "greenhouse" set-up (trays with tall clear cover) yesterday to try germination in the house instead of the greenhouse. Depending on the number of seeds, I think I will try floating some and putting some in the tray. I was given a seed potting mix to try, one that supposedly lessens damping off. We'll see.

It was a strange flower, and the pod is equally strange... it will be very interesting to see if the offspring turn out normal, or if they will carry this strange twist of Nature...

Wildebloem, I keep coming back and looking at your photos on this. I am truly mesmerized! Both seem to have equal color, form and growth. It's like hippi siamese twins!

Funny you should say that: I was just thinking earlier they remind me of fraternal twins.

I took these shots in extremely low light and did not want to use flash (to avoid distortion), so the images are not all that clear. But if you look closely at the top photograph, you can see there is a difference between the two pods. The pod on the right has six very well-defined chambers. The other pod has ten chambers, but they are not very well defined in some areas. What is most fascinating to me is the partial cover on the one side of the combo.

I caught those distinctions even tho I called them twins. I hope you will give us daily updates. As I indicated before, this is a very fascinating event! I am sure we all want to know how it will progress. Thanks for sharing! I feel like I am watching an experiment unfold. lol

From looking at a number of pod photographs, it appears the side with six chambers is the more "standard" pod. So I will definitely keep the seeds from the pod with ten chambers separated from the others.

My husband is wondering what the seeds from the joined chambers will look like... whether they will be fused together, or just normal... Siamese Twin Amaryllis!

Personally, I think it's just some kind of genetic anomale, and will not be passed to the progeny... but if for some reason it is, my thought is that it may only appear in one or two out of a hundred or so progeny, or may not even show up again for another generation or two...

I still think it's the coolest looking thing I've seen so far!

Jodi, I pretty much agree with you: I do not feel if the seeds are fertile, the seedlings will necessarily be unusual. Still, I will not be able to say for certain until I see what develops. I do feel the seeds will appear as singles, but that is only a guess, too.

It will be a fun experiment to grow them and see what develops! I'm interested to see the seeds that are in the fused chamber... will the seeds be fused or distorted in some fashion? Or will they be normal, only sharing one wall of the chamber? Can't wait to see what's inside!

Nature is awesome... and also bizarre! It's exactly things like the double pod that make genetics so very interesting a subject for me... to think that all it takes is one tiny allele placed differently on the chain, and a whole new characteristic is brought into play... amazing, indeed!

The double pod (or should I say pods) is starting to shrivel and change color. No splits yet.

Very beautiful, Wildebloem! I planted some mixed crocus in the new bulb bed last fall... it will be nice to see it peek above ground and flower!

Here goes: the first (smaller) pod is splitting. Keep those fingers crossed it has seeds.

Cindee, re. spring flowers: one of my favorites, since childhood, remains the snowdrop. I have collected lots of tiny vases just for them and the earliest fragrant violets. I mean, who can resist this:

Crocus and Snow Drops, love em. But so does some animal here. Now violets I adore I'm edging a walk with them. I'll get some photos this spring, white, bi-color, and purple.

Are you using the old fashioned fragrant violets? If you are, where did you find them? I found a company named Canyon Creek which appears to have the best selection around, but when I ordered, they also sent along a little problem named violet gall midge - and they refused to even answer repeated requests for information about dealing with the problem (I was not asking for them to make good, I just wanted to know how to get rid of the little critters). I would love to find a reputable source.

I only have one variety of fragrant, it's a purple double. If it's made it through the winter I'll send ya a division when I can get to that part of the garden. I know Logees has some fragrant varieties but they're not cheap and are in the 2.5 inch pots. There is a violet forum here and I'm sure someone there can help with the gall midge, and maybe even a source.

Thank you, Chaz. I did buy the ones Logee's offered (and will probably order some more this year) - they are tiny all right, but they do scoot once they get going. The deer consider them candy though, so I have to grow them in pots as well. But that also means I can bring them indoor early in the year and enjoy them close-up (try hanging a pot at "nose height" indoor, too good for words - works like magic with lilies-of-the-valley as well).

I did try the violet forum without much luck. Oh well, I will keep looking.

Come the spring there is a local nursery where I bought my fragrant double. I'll see if they have different varieties. I think it was around $10.00 but it was a 4 or 6 inch pot. If I send a division it'll be bare root Wilde, don't wanna send any pathogens from outdoors your way. We've got lily beetle and narcissus fly here.
