Maybe go with Midnight Blue. It's a smaller one that sounds perfect for your spot. Or the mini Sweet Chariot. Or International Herald Tribune. I could keep going, I love purples! :o)

Disease-free and purple roses usually aren't in the same sentence though!

I'd offer up Vi's Violet, a mini that's 2-1/2'tall and wide. No disease problems and has a nice fragrance. Rose blooms all the way through the 100's. About to bloom again now. Starts bloom cycle in April.

'International Herald Tribune' is a very heavy bloomer and stays short.

Height is not important actually desirable. My limitations is only width, which should not be more than 3-4 feet maximum.

Purple/lavender roses, fragrance, and disease resistance usually don't happen in the same plant. If you find one, please let us know. A good grower and bloomer that gets tall but not wide is Lady X. Another really nice one is Silverado. Since you are in the San Jose area, why not try to get the Lady X, and from the Armstrong Garden Centers the Silverado and another one called Plum Crazy? All three of these have beautiful flowers on bushes that don't spread very wide. Two of them are quite fragrant. All need spraying, but in lavenders, that is expected.

I'll 2nd Plum Crazy! Had mine shipped from Armstrong last spring and it is just gorgeous! As was already stated, it does not get that wide at all.

IHT is short for everyone else. I have two that are grew to 4 feet high this year ?!#%&!

Get Sequoia's Baby Faurax. This is sold by Vintage as Raymond Privat, but they are the same plant. It is the right size, quite poiple with some shade, more pink in a lot of sun. Like all polys, it starts blooming late and then doesn't stop until January.

I second Midnight Blue. Good foliage, constant flower, and a truly dark and contrasty purple. MIne thrives in an impossible spot with total neglect!OH yes, great fragrance too!

Purple passion. It is extremely fragrant and very vigorous. It is more purple than most pictures show. It is the most fragrant rose I have and I have only very fragrant ht's and fl's

International Herald Tribune is the closest I've seen to a disease free in this category. If is a very free bloomer. I have Midnight Blue with it because they are very similar in size and bloom shape and the colors contrast nicely. Midnight Blue has a wonderful fragrance.

I am a west-coast rose grower and would recommend one that I grow, the floribunda "Love Potion." It fits your width restriction, has glossy, disease-resistant foliage and gives plenty of fragrant, lavender blooms. (re: real blackspot -- that shouldn't be a problem in your area, but it resists that too)

Good fast repeat bloomer for me even in partial shade (it's entwined with a clematis that's huge) and relatively disease free. Some fragrance but I wouldn't say a lot.

The floribunda Escapade is an exceptionally graceful shrub and would go well with others mentioned here. I esp. love Sweet Chariot, which displays different shades of color in pretty sprays, nice arching growth. The bloom is mini but the plant is not-- it's a spreader, easily 30" wide probably more for you in San Jose. Night Owl is a gorgeous climber but was resolutely fuschia-pink until nights turned cool here. THEN we got purple, real purple.

barbarag happy: I put Escapade and Night Owl in the same bed with IHT and Midnight Blue. I'm glad to know Escapade will make a graceful shrub. Night Owl pretty much took off running, color variable, but variable in the same way the others in that color range.

Jody, Which is the dark colored rose in that photo? Is that their summer colors or cooler weather colors? I really need the dark one.

My Midnight blue in full sun turns into an unattractive faded grayish color in summer. It really looks ugly in high summer heat in full sun.

Have you thought about Intrigue? Intrigue is a Floribunda that is short growing and very fragrant. Its a deep purplish color. Very pretty and FRAGRANT.
