New Curry Leaf Plant Dying?

Hi Everyone,

I had posted some questions last year about my curry leaf plant..However that plant died. For Thanksgiving my parents gave me 2 more curry plants. They potted it and everything was fine. Now the branches and leafs are dry (they've lost the green color) and every time I move it to the sunlight, leaves just fall like rain. I pruned one completly because the dropping leaves became a big nuisance and the plant was looking so unattractive. The other plant has all dried leaves; there are no lush green leaves to be found on it. What can I do to restore them? Please, any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated. I live in Chicago and it's cold outside.

This may be a bit late to help your plant, but I have to ask what have you been doing to take care of this plant?

Leaf drop is indicative of a root problem and root problems can be caused by many factor - like transplant shock (caused during transplant), or was it overwatered and it drowned out the roots, or was there a period of non-watering and caused the roots to shriver, or did you fertilize which is a no-no shortly after a transplant or during winter.
I'm not sure what you meant by everytime you moved it to sunlight - It should have steady access to light. MOist but not overly moist earth.

Scratch the bark off the main trunk and if you still see a lively green colour, there's hope for this plant. If not, it's too late.

I agree with ianna. I had a curry leaf plants time to time and bite the bullet after couple of years later. They are not easy to grow indoor (in cold regions) if the air in the house is too dry. If the bark is still green it may have new growth in coming spring!

I cant speak for pots and relocation but when I got my curry leaf plant from market it had light green to yellow leaves. I planted it into the ground and it started growing but leaf colored amused me as it was still not dark green. Then I nuked it with rose fertilizer, 12-8-10 and that did the trick. green leaves need nitrogen and that did the trick for me and not only it went into growth spurt, it turned very dark green and is now looking very happy!

Personally I think a bushy plant like this, if it is growing well, you can prune it now and it will rebound. You don't need seeds to propagate it. You can also try rooting cuttings when you prune it. I think I read that cuttings about the size of a pencil do well. I live in a climate with very cold winters, but I've got a curry leaf plant in a bucket, that I move indoors to a sunny south-facing window for the middle of winter, outdoors for summer, and in the greenhouse for "shoulder season" in spring and autumn. It looked great the first year when it was small, and we were using it frequently. Over the winter it went yellow and miserable, so I snipped it right down to bare stems at 6 to 12 inches in the early spring, and it leafed out nicely. But I transplanted it to a bigger bucket with some additional worm compost, but then it had chlorosis and miserable yellowed leaves with some tiny brown spots all summer. I tried fertilising, not fertilising and washing water through the soil, acidifying the water, and nothing seemed to make much difference. Finally now in August-Sept it has started looking a decent green. Phew! I think it would be much happier in the ground, but in my unheated solar greenhouse, the temperature goes below freezing every night for a month or two. It's fine for leafy green vegetables, but I don't know if curry leaf would survive. Anybody have any ideas about that?

I bought 2 curry leaf plants during spring time, about 5 inches tall, with straight growth. I planted them to a bigger pot(old pic attached), and kept them indoors during spring time. Both the plants lost the new sprigs shooting at the top, the plants went into stress probably. I later moved them outside when weather was getting better, but few days it remained outside in night temp. around 55F. The plants get morning sunlight for 3-4 hrs. The tip of the plant shows no life, no small leaves at all. What can I do? I separared the plants into individual clay pots, water when top soil looks dry, fertilized once with a teaspoon of epsom salt. I feel sad looking at my plants not showing any growth. Please help!!!
