For now just keep loving it as though it were any other houseplant. Give it plenty of light, mild fertilizer and water sparingly. Once the weather is nice, move it outside. That way it can get some Mother Nature lovin'. You won't have to worry about any "cold treatment" until Fall. In fact, you don't even have to do ANY kind of treatment. With the proper light and feeding it will bloom for you again regardless :-) Mwah!

Some force dormancy at the end of summer, and some allow the bulbs to grow and bloom by their own natural schedules.

I'm in the north, so mine spend a lot of time indoors. I grow them just as I would any houseplant that likes a lot of light. They bloom every spring, though a few will take time off to get some extra rest or recharge a little longer than others... it depends on the variety.

For now, do as Larissa says... treat the bulb with TLC... lots of sunlight, and careful water and feed. You have all spring and summer to decide if you want to force the bulb for Christmas or allow it to grow and cycle naturally.

Thank you... I was worried about the yellow leaves. I think I overwatered. :( It seems okay now just sitting there in the gh. The roots look good. It is good to know they need a dormacy period I did not know that. SHooo I am not the plant person in my family. I just try...LOL

Good question rosepedal. I am seeing lots of brug growers on this forum, lol. I am an amaryllis newbie too and was wondering the same thing.

I visit a few other forums other than the brug forum, like the hosta and houseplant forums, but don't post a whole lot. But this group here seems as nutty and friendly and laid back as the brug forum so I am more comfortable posting.

If you're slightly twisted and laid back, you've most certainly come to the right place! And we're glad to have you!

It's too bad everyone is joining us toward the end of the Hippeastrum season, though we tend to have fun and keep things going through the off season, as well!

Probably one of the most important things to keep in mind is that Hippeastrum bulbs are prone to rot, so be very careful not to over-water! This is where having a more gritty, porous medium would come in handy... it takes the guesswork out of watering, to an extent.

I don't have any Brugs, but I do have a Plumeria and several other tropical plants... please come in and make yourselves at home! Welcome! Get the door, will you, Ryan? It's still a little chilly here! :-)

Please, do be careful, Jodi! You will be hooked on brugs if you ever acquire one. Hopefully we are not too contagious yet. With any luck, brug fever will hold off until you get settled into a new place and have more room!

Silly question, I'm sure, but can I repot my amaryllis? I bought one of those kit things at Christmas and it bloomed beautifully, but is in a very small container. Does it need more space?

I repot those "kit" things quite soon -- sometimes while they are yet in bloom if I feel the "soil" (if you can call that peat stuff soil) is soggy or not enough to support the bulb and bloom. In fact, I've repotted a bunch of them I purchased this year (for $1.98). Several are rewarding me by sending up another scape and I know they have roots now because they are fast in the potting medium.

You know, I'm going to have to toddle on over to the brug forum. I have four of them. They bloom all summer, and I just cut them back and shove them in the basement for the winter. Am sure there is something else I should be doing. These are many years old and the plastic pots are disintrigrating.

Whenever I purchase a "kit" amaryllis, I immediately pitch the plastic pot and the coir disk that comes with the bulb! I try to use unglazed clay pots, making sure there's about 2 inches of space between the bulb and the pot side, all the way around. The medium I use is very gritty and porous, allowing for maximum drainage and a rather quick "dry out" time. I treat my bulbs as though they were more succulent than bulb, so to speak.

I haven't acquired any Brugs on purpose, Ryan... I'm too afraid I'll become addicted to those, too... and Lord knows I don't have the room for such a large tropical plant! Right now, the largest plant I have is the Plumie, and it's still young.

When we moved, I gave away the majority of my houseplants, knowing I wouldn't have the space for many of them. In fact, the only plants I brought with me was my Minerva... the Apple Blossom, one AV, and a cutting of a lipstick plant that bloomed and then died. Oh, and a potful of sans. I left behind a pair of huge spider plants, another pair of 7 foot tall dracaenas, pothos, philodendrons, and a plethora of other common houseplants.

Now, I'm all about bulbs! Tender bulbs! Other tropical plants and orchids have joined the fray, and I love them all! I'm not quite ready to devote time and space to Brugs, although I'm sure there will come a day...

Are Brugs and Datura the same? Cousins? That part confuses me a bit because they look so similar in photos.

Ryan from Phx- Do you know what is the difference between Brugs and Daturas? Jodi and I are on the same page with that one. I think I might take to collecting Brugs since they are so easily propogated from cuttings and easily shared!

Don't ask Brug Questions!!!!! I've taken to keeping them dormant in the basement. It can be a worse addiction than the Hippis!!!!!!!! LOL I keep a few in the garden every year in containers. They always get oooo's and ahhhhhh's and the scent at night is breathtaking! on a warm night (rare here in New England) they can be smelled up to 60 feet away or more.
I don't post very often on the Brug forum, but they are just as much a family as the hippi forum, great bunch of knowledgable friendly folks.
Brugs flowers point down for the most part, angels trumpets pointing down from heaven. Datura flowers point up, devils trumpets pointing up to the heavens. I love them both, the datura reseed in the garden here.

Thanks for the information, Chaz! That's one plant I'm not trying until I have more space to spread out in! I don't have the room to winter them over!

they can be cut down and overwintered in pots in a basement dormant, or as I've done in the past, just take cuttings and put them in a bucket of water in a dark place over the winter, they'll root in the water within days if it's not to cool, then when planted in the spring they reach blooming size before fall. I've had success either way, but when really short of room I try the "bucket o brugs" as they call it on the brug forum. They are one plant I really don't want to do without.

I'll end up with buckets everywhere! I'll be tripping over them all winter, and Larry will be asking me what the heck I've got all over the place in water! I foresee potential disaster!

I'd better wait until we actually get a house... though, now that you've made it all sound so easy and so wonderful, I don't know how I'll manage without some! Doggone it, Chaz! You... you... Enabler! :-)

Since I tend to cave easily to peer pressure, depending on what the consequences will be, I'll cave this once... but I'm only doing this to make you feel better, Ryan! I know how hard it can be to have extra plants and cuttings laying around! :-)

I thought we had some Datura seeds around here somewhere, but I can't find them now. If memory serves me, and it usually doesn't, I could swear we got some seeds last fall to plant for this year. Where they're hiding, I'm not sure. If I find them, I'm definitely going to plant some!

Originally, I hadn't really wanted to dabble in them, knowing I'd fall in love with another plant... and the collecting would begin in earnest. So, when those seeds came in, I tossed them somewhere to purposely forget about them. I didn't order them... my gardening partner did. But, since I do all the planting, I'm the one choosing what we'll grow. Sneaky, huh? (snicker, snicker)

I shall renew my efforts to find those seeds. If I do, I'll let you know what kind they are. I now hope my mind wasn't playing tricks on me, and it's some other plant we got seeds for... hmmmm... and I really hope I didn't leave them out in the freezing garage over winter! Yikes!
