moving an older climbing rose

Am being advice to move an older rose like New Dawn. Ok,do you 1st prune way down and then hopefully be able to dig it up or what are the suggested steps in doing so

Pretty much as you've described. Ideally, you want as much of a root ball as possible, but that's not always possible. You'd also benefit from balancing the top growth and root ball as closely as possible. It's also possible to literally bare root the plant, if that is doable where you are at this time of the year. You'd want all the foliage taken off to reduce the water transpiration and keep the plant from drying out. Right now, creating food isn't as important as keeping the plant properly hydrated.

You may cover the top growth with a mound of loose soil/mulch which will prevent it from being dried out by wind or direct sun. You may cover it with sheeting or old tee shirts which you keep wet with the hose or any other method of keeping it shaded from any hot sun and kept moist against any drying winds. If it's raining fairly regularly where you are, the rain will do much of that for you.

I'd get the new planting hole prepared as much as possible so you can lift the plant from where it is and get it under soil ASAP. Treat it as you would a newly planted bare root and you should succeed easily. Good luck! Kim

SAFTY FIRST That ground is hard enough to break a pick axe and your back all in one swing. I don't think anyone wants to hear how you had to go to a phone to dail 9 1 1 end up delaying your move over a few pulled muscles or perhaps a few stiches. pfzimmerman has a good idea or two it could work on the water concerns for thawing a frozen ground like yours is always up to you. On cuttings from some this might be worth a shot however I highly doubt that it would work at this time of the year I give three thumbs up on the Burling suggestion Another idea and perhaps a long shot There is a group (in my area) called friends of roses concider giving a rose growing group in your area a call(if you can phone call them) and explain your situation to them I am almot certian they will work with you or future owners for a win win result. Aside from your sentimental values a 100+ yr old rose is worth this effort as well.

Although our climates are so different, presuming the most critical factor of keeping them hydrated would be the same. And if you do decide to move them, do expect some wilting / dropping, and some loss for at least a month after the move. Roses are very hardy. I couldn't bare to prune off all the blooms on the ones I've moved, although I'll bet they'd have recovered faster if I had. I'll be interested in what the correct percentage of pruning is prior to or after a move as I've also pruned very little and still have been successful.

Sara, you'll get more responses over on the main Roses Forum. Roses can be moved at any time, but during hot weather, you'll want to be extra careful. Prepare the new holes first. Then water your plants very well in their existing location. You can trim them down if you like. The next day, dig up your plants, making sure to come out wide enough to get a large part of the root ball. Move the plant to its new location and plant. Water in well and check for watering. They might get transplant shock (yellow leaves that drop off) that happens. Don't under or over water. Don't fertilize until you see new growth after you move the plants. Now, with the plants that you name, I wonder if blackspot might not be another issue. It is a fungal disease that will affect your plants. Treatment is by regular application of a fungicide. Third thing is, if your Queen Elizabeth is the climbing version, then it is a notorius non-bloomer. Nice shrubbery, not many blooms. The regular bush (non-climbing) version is very vigorous and a bloom machine.

I have never heard of cutting back a bare root rose at planting unless there is some dead cane to be removed. Pruning of any kind always stimulates TOP growth, not the roots. You can leave all the hips on you want. The rose will not go dormant. It will continue to put out growth until the weather stops it. I've left hips on from the spring flush in June and the rose continued to grow and bloom right through until October. New Dawn is such a growth monster that I can't see any purpose in disbudding it. The roots are growing, count on it! Roses, climbers in particular, will not send up more cane than their root system can sustain. Hence the saying for climbers, first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. Those first few years that it seems to not be doing anything it is in fact building a big enough root ball to be able to push nutrients up those long canes you're waiting for. Once it feels it has sufficient roots to do that it will begin to climb.
