That is the nature of all flowers in the rain especially medium tall or tall flowers. The water fills the spaces in the bloom and makes it too heavy for the stems to support. It is why peony flowers fall apart in the rain and Delphiniums fall over. Cutting them back is not the answer. You'd be cutting off the blooms. You can try giving them support by criss crossing short pieces of bamboo in the pot or somehow staking them. You can also go out after a rain and give them a gentle shake to remove the water from the blooms. Next time choose a more compact plant for your planters

I'm a newbie still, but I grew them last year from seed and I'll tell ya what, I couldn't kill those suckers if I tried. I planted the seeds way too close together and they grew so thick I had to seperate them up and they were unhappy for a couple of days but they recovered. I don't know if the babies will be as hardy, but I would assume so.

I remember a post saying osteopernums grow and flower really quickly. I can't attest to that first-hand, but am going to give them a try next year. Susan - That Mexican Slipper Flower is so unique looking. I've never seen those before. I'll have to remember those for next year. threeorangeboys - My bachelor buttons did the same things. They grew really tall and then flopped all over the place. I posted about this very topic, and these are the responses I got. Next year I may look for the dwarf variety. I pruned back my current ones and thinned them out a bit. They're starting to grow back, but I can't tell yet if they're going to stay straight once they grow taller and flower. I must be strange I killed my BB plants from last year :) I wish I had saved some seeds now. Don't know how I killed them, they were they only plants to perish over the winter... Glad you saved some seeds! I saved some recently from a white flower plant and I forgot to label so I have no clue what the darn thing is. I may have to post an ID here so I can offer the seeds for anyone. I don't need the amount I saved! it was a lot from this one plant. Karen
