'Queen Elizabeth' Grade # confusion

Hi Rose Gardeners,

I bought several roses from Lowes they had two different batches (grades #1 & 1.5) and numerous cultivars. One of the roses I bought is 'Queen Elizabeth'. The package on that plant said Grade #1.5. I went back to buy a couple more roses and I noticed that 'Queen Elizabeth' was being sold both as Grades #1 and 1.5. I also bought 'Peace' labeled as grade #1 and went back to only find that cv in the 1.5 section. Note that my receipts say that the grade #1 plants are Non patented. What is going on?

The grade # refers to the number of healthy canes, not to whether or not the plant is in patent.

And sometimes they're not too accurate, at that.

Jeri's right. I've had grade 1.5 plants that had 4 or 5 canes when the grade 1 plants only had 2 or 3 canes on them. I don't look at the grades any more. I just look for the ones that look healthy and hydrated.

Regular QE is tall and vigorous, making basal shoots, I'd say, 4-6' tall. Both basal and lateral shoots always end in a bloom cluster. By contrast, a climbing rose, once established, can make basal shoots 7-12' long; these don't consistently bloom the first season, depending on the variety. Summer shoots of Cl. QE don't bloom for most people until the following spring. If you have regular QE, you might choose to cut shoots back some after blooming so the next round of flowers will stay within reach.

That being said, after saving them in two world wars, I'll keep my rock and roll LOL! Um ... you do know about Britain's "tiny little contribution" to music, don't you? ;-) Or do you need to be reminded of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Queen, The Who, Black Sabbath, The Cure, Motorhead, Coldplay, The Police, Duran Duran, Radiohead, Sex Pistols, Portishead, The Clash, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, The Kinks ... Theoretically, if the food was processed safely, for example for canning, and stored properly and shows no sign of spoilage, until that vacuum seal is broken, there should be no way that it becomes further contaminated or becomes unsafe. The one issue with keeping foods too long is you will get quality deterioration, you can get real darkening of colours of many foods, you might get some cloudiness that occurs as starches settle out of the foods, all these extended quality changes over time can start to interfere with our ability to detect spoilage even though it may not be actual spoilage, it may just be deterioration of the food quality, so it's not a good idea to me to try use things really old or try to look at 25 year old food and assume that it's safe...We just don't have absolute expiration dates to give people and neither does the commercial industry, quite frankly. I suspect that 'RdV' may have been confused in commerce with 'Triomphe d'Amiens' early on... 'TdA' was introduced in 1859 by Mille-Mallet, and 'RdV' was sent out the next year from the same breeder. Their illustrated plates were both published in the 1860 edition of L'Illustration Horticole, and look somewhat similar... Another HP in that colour family is 'Vulcain'. Perhaps you could order one before Brexit takes whatever toll it will take on ordering from the rest of Europe? It came out in 1861... Honestly, though, who knows how many of the old roses are who they are supposed to be? Some are truly distinctive enough, and have been in commerce steadily since their introduction so that you feel pretty sure that 'Perle d'Or' really IS 'Perle d'Or'. With the HP's, Teas, etc., who can really say for sure? And so we're back to the Bard, asking "What's in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet..." Virginia

Attaching a quick link describing the grades. Smaller the number, the better according to the standards, but I agree with Seil is that finding the healthiest is more important than the grade. Thanks for the heads-up that the bareroots are arriving - I ran over to my nearest Lowes and picked up Chicago Peace and Peter Mayle.

I suspect all of those roses were patented at one time but the patents run out after 20 years. After that, royalities no longer have to be paid so many end up in less expensive selections.
Less than grade 1 roses are available with any rose, patented or not.
Most potted roses sold, even new introductions, started out as grade 1.5.

I hate to discourage anyone but a lot of packaged roses get misnamed real easy. I used to sell them, so I know. You get Peace and it might be Tiffany. Not all the packaged roses are like that, just beware!
The workers in the fields are tagging roses, they reach into their left pocket and see they have no more tags , so they go to the right pocket ,which is a different rose, and finish tagging the row!!

So true Dan. I quit buying when I got so many wrong roses. One of my favorites, a pink climbing HT, was an oops. Even a pricey patented lavender from Armstrong turned out eventually to be Dream Come True.

One of the reasons my first choice roses have at least one bloom on them, so I can verify what I'm getting. Although I must say I think I've been lucky, as most of mine have been labeled correctly. But I do have a few surprises. I have one from Orchard Supply that is "supposed" to be Pink Promise. But the color of the blooms are more like Pink Peace, but the form is wrong. The fragrance is out of this world. I did finally buy a Pink Promise this week as I do want one in my garden. I dunno - when I buy roses for $8 or less, I'm prepared to go with the flow.
