HMF discussion of photo ratings

I wanted to post this to the Antique Rose Forum, but it refused to acknowledge me. Roses has no issue. Go figure.

There is a discussion under way on Help Me Find concerning the ratings system and its validity. I know many who belong to Garden Web have opinions and may wish to share them. Here is the link where you may read, follow and chime in. Thanks. Kim

One of the discussion topics that is receiving the most attention regards the merit of the "Aesthetic Value" voting option. Some feel that by including this option, people are being encouraged to treat it as a "beauty pageant" and that is counterproductive to the main goal of the ratings. What is the main goal of the rating system? HMF admins feel (If I may sum up some of their statements) that it ought to act as a tool to emphasize the more useful photos; the photograph as "diagnostic" tool, or one which illustrates the honest-to-goodness behavior of the plant, warts and all. Sometimes the prettiest photos happen to be good "diagnostic" photos as well, but not always. Sometimes a casual snapshot of the whole plant, regardless of what other clutter might be in the photo, or how well lit and composed the image is, is the most meaningful to people who are shopping for a rose with certain features as their priority: bush shape/size, for example. We all want to have an idea of how a certain cultivar is going to look in our garden, and the best way of providing people with that information is to upload your photos of the rose in your garden. So the question is whether the photo ratings on HMF facilitate or hinder the process.

If HMF wants to have a way to prioritize the most useful photos, then putting a system in place for participants to vote for image merit is a good approach. Voting for an image based on its "art" merit may or may not serve a purpose in achieving that goal. What is your opinion? How can HMF promote the best photos without turning the process into a beauty contest?

This is currently an issue for HMF admin because more than one person has stated that they have either removed a photo because it got a "poor" aesthetic rating, or have refrained from including a snapshot of their plant for fear of receiving a "poor" aesthetic rating. Any and all ideas for avoiding perceived problems in this matter are welcome. Feel free to voice your opinion here and/or at HMF in the following discussion:

I have posted my opinions, as it is something I also brought to their attention back in April this year. The reply was dismissive. I won't hold my breath.

I have grown several Albas (Blanche de Belgique, Blush Hip, Chloris, FÃÂ©licitÃÂ© Parmentier, 'Great' MaidenÃ¢ÂÂs Blush, & KÃÂ¶nigin von DÃÂ¤nemark). When I designed my current garden I used Alba roses and hydrangeas for a lot of my great foundation planting spots. They may only bloom once-per-year, but they are worth the prime garden real estate for their toughness and beautiful blue-green leaves alone (well, those flowers don't hurt ofc). I love each that I've met for different reasons (though I don't have the KvD any more and did choose to leave her behind in the end). Great Maiden's Blush is definitely among my favorites of all my OGRs. She thrives in shade, remains healthy all year long, develops nice fat hips come winter, and has a particularly graceful arching habit. My favorite thing though (and this may be because of the crappy spot I put her in) is that she is one of my latest-blooming once-bloomers. So just as everything else is sort of fading away she decides to delight our eyes for a few more precious weeks. I WILL say though that I kind of doubt I have the 'Great' version...I have a grafted plant that I originally bought I think in 2002 from Pickering and "deep planted" so I assume she's own root at this point. I lifted her, most unceremoniously, in 2010 to take her to my new home because she was one rose I was NOT going to leave behind. Mine is only about 4-5 feet in height/width (but again, I have her in a particularly crappy spot). In fact, maybe it's time to officially just drop the "Great" in my own head? Anyhow, I've since heard that labeling the shorter "Maiden's Blush" as "Great" is a pretty wide-spread problem so that is definitely something to keep in mind as her site her. Would you like a photo? (Of course you do, right??!!) I've shared this one before but maybe it's worth sharing again? Did I forget to mention that she has THE most elegant and beautiful sepals? How much longer til June? I'm sorry for assuming. I went by your username, you never signed your real name. I would imagine it might be best to take advantage of local opportunities. Is there any way you can go on a car trip around town in FLorida to see if there are ANY instances of THE actual rose you are looking for still in town or in the surrounding counties at older homes and or abandoned homesites/former farms? That way you can ask the owners of that property if there is a house nearby if you can take cuttings yourself? Or if there is plain no one in sight, go up and take a cutting yourself? That's called 'rose rustling" by some, when they find old abandoned roses and either find permission to move them, take care of them or take cuttings. That way it's FREE, and completely up to you AND it gets you exactly the rose you want. I'm still unclear about what you actually want, most of the signs you are saying point either to pink pet/caldwell pink Old blush Dorthoy Perkins. But it seems I've either read incorrectly, someone is suggesting your rose does not repeat while I'm remembering the rose you are looking for that you've seen has been described as flowering year round. Can you please confirm if the bush blooms only once for a few weeks to a month or throughout the season in flushes? If you're worried about not finding it, I'm sure it's around if you say it's as common as it was. Even I see old bulbs still poking up in certain spots in woods as I drive by where there might have been a house or path around here, plants are terribly resilient! In fact I know where there is a giant stand of r.virginiana or carolina by the road where these days you'd usually see the invasive multiflora. I repeat I think you are probably looking for 'Old Blush' and it can be considered an old Florida heirloom. Best wishes, I hope you find your rose. Max

Last night before being dragged off to bed by DH I looked at Sue's, Anita's, Eric's and Jeri's gardens. The pictures that were there were wonderful, but the really surprising thing was how it made me feel to "see" all the different roses (via the the listings) that each was growing. It was almost like walking through the garden. It was a really neat connection. Some were ones that I grow which made me want to email to see how they were doing! Plus there were many that I had never heard of that I want to look into further. This is really a wonderful asset that allows us to browse through photos and gardens whenever we want to. I never realized there were so many gardens on HMF. It's really fantastic. I'm looking forward to taking more tours tonight and maybe every night! Thanks, Anita, for being so nice. Sherry

yes, it's not working normally for me either. If you click on the picture of whatever variety you've looked up, it will take you to that photo page, then you can use the back button ON THE HMF PAGE not the one from your browser and it will take you back to the info page and show a different pic... if there's more than one in the library of course. You can do this until you get back to the picture you started with. Let me know if I was unclear. Rob BC:)

Personally, I don't think the reply was dismissive at all. There are always time and funding constraints on every website. You made some good suggestions and I am sure they were noted. As Susan said above, there is more commentary about this topic on the Antique Roses Forum.
