1st year bloomers - didn't think

This is my 1st year WS and I think I did pretty well. However, I did not occur to me that the ws seedlings/sprouts may not flower this (1st) year. So, I am off to buy some annuals / few perennials for the garden so I have some color besides green this year! I know that next years gardens will be full of this years ws blooms (I hope).

I'm not the best google searcher....is there a list somewhere of perennials that will bloom the 1st year? I thought I recently saw a post addressing this but did not find it this morning.

Run a search of this site. Personally, I think first year green is beautiful, but others have asked this question and there is a list somewhere.

Nothing like a 3rd year perennial bed!

Can you post the perennials you WSed? We can probably all chip in the info as to 'first year bloomer or not'.

I was browsing the internet for reviews and/or comments about Wild Swan and this thread came up. So I'll ask here. I planted mine in the Spring of 2015 and still no blooms. The foliage seems healthy, hasn't wilted despite this past hot summer, but not as full as I see in photos posted here. There is even new growth coming from the center. However, no blooms. It is in semi shade until 2pm. and then gets full sun for several hours. Good soil with leaf mulch. I'm wondering if I should move it and try again somewhere else, but I'd hate to lose it altogether. I don't even think nurseries here are carrying it anymore, perhaps other gardeners did not have success with it here in NE Ohio.

I had a few non bloomers. I was chalking it up to the flood this past spring but some may be sulking from having pods set on them last year. 2 year old plants I've never seen bloom An Easy Call Bluegrass Music Caspers Shadow Mildred Mitchell Russian Temple Special Ovation 40 seedlings out of 95 that were planted Spring of 2010. Plants that bloomed last year but nada this year. I did set 1 or 2 pods on many of these so that could be the reason. I try not to over pollinate. Answering Angels President Ronald Reagan Spacecoast Behavior Pattern Water Dragon 3 of my seedlings I had set pods on last year didn't bloom this year. Flood Victim Voodoo Magic. I was hearbroken when I didn't see any fans in it's spot after the flood then a few days later green appeared. So I assume it got broke at the crown but shot up 4 babies. No Bloom this year but at least I still have it. But I do have one of those seedlings planted in Spring of 2010 shooting up a scape now. I really doubt it will be this late of a bloomer. What do you mean by "too large"? Nikko Blue gets to be a good sized shrub, 4-6' tall and as wide, often quite a bit larger in my area. If you need to prune to control size, then I'd suggest you relocate the plant to an area where it can grow undisturbed. Because of the growth and bloom habits of a bigleaf hydrangea, it's a risky business trying to maintain these at a specific size smaller than what they want to be. The best time to specifically reduce size is when the plant is in the middle of its bloom season - hard to do then (far less so if it's not blooming at all :-)), but really the only guaranteed time to be able to remove significant growth without affecting future blooms. The drawback is that pruning stimulates new growth and the plant will quickly return to its former size. I've found that the following site has the best information on hydrangeas virtually anywhere on the 'Net. You'll notice that they clearly indicate that pruning should be kept to a minimum if at all possible on H. macrophyllas, but if that is impossible July is the latest preferred time. Azura, last year was my first real veggie garden, and I learned a lot. There were successes and failures, but I enjoyed it so much. Skybird is right about you wanting to make it bigger next year. I created a separate bed for the herbs this year, just so I could plant more veggies in veggie garden. So far, I planted onion sets and peas (twice). I also have five kinds of lettuce, and broccoli sprouts that were wintersown, that I might plant out as soon as the crazy winds die down. Plus there are tomatoes and peppers in my kitchen windowsill, and tomatoes that were wintersown but haven't germinated yet. I'm also direct sowing carrots maybe this week, but the cucumbers, canteloupes, and beans won't get planted for another month or so. My goal is for as much variety as possible, even if it means just one or two plants of each - 5 kinds of beans, 4 kinds of canteloupe, 5 kinds of carrots, 4 kinds of cukes, 7 kinds of peppers, and as many different tomatoes as I can cram into the space that's left, and the Earthbox I just bought. I'd rather have too many plants and have to give some away, than to realize I have empty space in the garden, and not enough time to start something else before the end of the season. The bed and soil look great, and I wish you a bountiful harvest. Bonnie

I won't go down the list, but sowed both annuals and perennials because only one kind of the latter will bloom this year. I've got some perennials going this year I planted last year that are starting to bloom.

I was where you are a couple years ago, practically started from scratch with flowers, but had some blooming trees.

And not everything went as hoped. I dug out a whole bed of shasta daisies after waiting a whole year to see them bloom, they bloomed a very short while, were crowding everything out, and the blooms tended to spot and were not even fit for a boquet. I bought Becky and want the spring blooming one.

I do purchase a lot of my plants but my main reason for growing from seed is that even if I had the time to run everywhere they sell plants now, I can have some really unique varieties of even common flowers that nobody carries. Plus you get a lot more for your money starting from seed.

Here's what I've had experience with from your list:

PainterÂs Palette Blanket Flower.... 2nd Year

Aquilegia Blend (Columbine)...2nd year (on all Columbines for me)

Coreopsis Sunburst...a little first year, better 2nd year

Dianthus Amazon NeonRose Magic (2nd year on all Sweet William...not sure if you have SW-- Dianthus barbatus)

Chives (can't get the durn things to even sprout!)

Thyme (Mother of Thyme) (either late first year, or 2nd year)

Delphinium Blues....2nd year...and they only sprout for me when I keep them in complete shade

DigitalisYellow Foxglove...late first year, then normal time 2nd year with bigger blooms

Chinese Lantern 2nd year for me

Obedient Plant (I'll find out...sowed first time this year)

Butterfly bush ...this is the second year for mine...we'll see. Definitely didn't bloom first year.

Aconitum Carmichaelli...must be 2nd year. I WSed some last year and it didn't bloom then.

Four oÂClock...my 4 Oclocks reseed with a vengeance.
