Getting Hippis to go dormant

Getting them to go to sleep is just about my biggest problem. How do others make this happen? I'm guessing in warm climate they just stay green forever? I've done a bit of reading on the internet, but don't believe I've "got it" yet. They rot outside in NJ during the summer, so I keep them inside now (in my small greenhouse) and bottom water. They're pampered pets. Last summer they had the biggest, healthiest leaves you could ever imagine, but come late October the other plants had to come inside and the hippis were still in full swing. Had to stuff them back under the deck and just stopped watering them. I felt to mean. The leaves gradually died down and got cut off. All the bulbs are healthy and I haven't watered yet because there's really not much room. Would appreciate others' experiences. Thanks!
