Wedding Dance and another shot at Basuto. Still no dice.

Soooooooo.....here is Wedding Dance. She opened for us today :-) I have to say, there is nothing in the world quite like a pure white bloom. Or getting a gift certificate for a massage for Valentine's Day. Sorry. I have present hint dropping fever. I've been mentioning it to husband-guy every day (twice a day) or so.

This pic has Wedding Dance standing tall above Basuto. Miracle is close behind her and Amputo is bringing up the rear. Why do I know have Baby Got Back playing in my head? It's a step up from "Biggie biggie biggie can't you see" that I've been rocking all day. Hear a song at the car wash and BAM it's on repeat in the head for the rest of the day. The lighting is crazy off and makes the reds look kinda gross but let's just call it my avant garde Sunday post.

Nice looking bunch you have there. I think the red looks awesome in that shot! Almost like velvet.

I have all these musical toys lying around the house that leave these really annoying kiddy tunes stuck in my head. The worst part is they don't even have words! So it's la la di di da di da all day!!!

LOL! Larissa, you never cease to amaze me with the creativity and hilarity of your posts! If other members don't partake of the rap music, they may have no clue what you are talking about. Also, the reference to Zoolander...priceless! I can only dream of creating posts with such character as you do! Loves it!

You've got a whole lotta of fun there! That Wedding Dance is a looker and tall too. My Christmas Gift bloomed super tall that way several years ago. I like the white but really like the color of those reds! Good Growing!

Lpink, May 2012 would be a LOT better. Talk to her, will you? OK, the beer can cake. Bake 4 eight inch layers, more if you want taller. Mine was supposed to be a mug, but I couldn't figure out the handle, so it became a glass. Buy a dowel at the hardware, mine was 98 cents, then make a batch of rock candy. It doesn't need to be flavored or colored, it will be that amber color when cooked. When it's cooked, spoon it over the dowel so it runs down, you'll have a long piece of the dowel to hold onto as you only want the candy over about a foot of the end of the dowel. As it cools for a couple of minutes it'll get a LOT thicker and stick to the dowel, you'll have to turn it and tilt it to keep the candy looking like a "stream". Scrape about an inch off the top so you can stick the can on, then cut off the bottom of the dowel with a serrated knife so that you can stick the dowel down into the middle of the cake and it will go all the way to the bottom, with the candy just at the top of the cake. Frost the cake beer colored and the "foam" is just white buttercream squeezed in blobs from a wide plain tip. Stick the dowel into the cake, stick the can on top and voila!! A suspended beer stream, pouring into the cake. (grin) Annie

Take along several sets of freshly charged batteries. At least one or two weeks before the wedding, go out to a park with a flower garden and practice shooting. Take pics in as many different kinds of lighting situations as you can. Practive! Practice! Practice! After all, its a digtal camera. The only cost for experimentation is charging the batteries. It costs nothing to toss away the practive shots. Its an outdoor weeding - be prepared for a range of sky conditions from bright sun to dark clouds. Give some thought to the background before which you will pose the bride and groom (and others). Will the bride and groom be leaving in their own car, or be driven by someone else? Get into position just before the happy couple enters their carriage and record this moment - It happens only once and will not be posed. Take shots of the vehicle departing. These are good pics to end the photo album. After the ceremony, arrange to pose the wedding crew (clergyman, bridesmaids, and flower children) on the spot where the wedding took place. Do many pairs and group shots. The bad shots can be tosssed, but a missed shot can not be recovered after the event, so make many exposures. Must-have grab shots: o cutting the cake o Bride and groom feeding each other cake o Dance shots. o Bride and groom with friends at the reception. o The gift table o Sample shots of the couple opening gifts (if done). I am always confounded by the professional bashing that goes on in all the THS forums (check out the BAH posts on architects, they make the designer bashing threads look tame). One would think laypeople interested in design and decorating would understand that creating a space is not easy, especially when so many self report going to a designer when they have exhausted their own ideas or patience with themselves. Good design is, IMO (and I have never taken a single design class, so take this FWIW) an amalgam of art, science, need, want, effort, compromise and affordability, all elements that struggle to be combined even moderately well in the best of circumstances. So when someone who is already frustrated with the time, money and effort they have spent trying to do things themselves or with the helpful (?) input of friends and family, it's not surprising they blame the designer, it's easier than looking objectively at the situation and it's much easier to feel that someone else, in this case the designer, has wasted your money. No one likes to blame themselves for financial mistakes like, say, the dozens of paint samples (and more than a few gallons) languishing in her basement, taunting the homeowner regularly. I have never used a designer, I arrogantly feel I don't need one because I like my own taste and, oh, yeah, cuz I am far too cheap and controlling to let someone make choices for me. We have, however, used an architect, twice, and while that wasn't cheap, it was valuable, and we came out with a better product for their involvement both times. Our architect made our ideas better and added some great ones of her/his own (we have used two different ones), and we all worked hard at communicating and understanding each others priorities, thoughts and opinions (and by all I mean me, the architect, mr. sandyponder and our kiddo, never assume that any professional can mind read the familial dynamics). As a wedding photographer myself, I have to agree with Tess. I understand the initial desire to have the digital negatives or the film negatives to make your own prints. However, there are some thing you need to understand before doing this. 1. No one works for free. If a photog is giving away a CD of images, you can be absolutely sure that you are paying for them someplace else, like in the upfront fees. Wedding photography is a business, like the limo service, the cake, the DJ service. It's all calculated and any wedding photog who's making a living won't be giving away his/her work for free. 2. Some of the photographer's costs to take into consideration; $15000 equipment taken to the wedding. $3000 editing machine at home, equipment and liability insurance. HOURS and HOURs of processing your photos AFTER a 10hr day of shooting. ...many more hours processing print orders and albums. AND equipment takes a TON of abuse at a wedding This very expensive gear can need replacing upgrading every 18 months or less!!! 3. Hours before wedding charging LOTS of battery power, cleaning equipment, etc. 4. Web space and site fees (can be very expensive). ...poing being; good photographers are not making as much as you think they are when you first see their prices. Many are just scraping by. If a couple really want the digital negatives to their wedding, I'm certainly willing to build that into my pricing and give it to them. It saves me a lot of time later to do it this way and I have the money upfront! ...BONUS! BUT, here's the kicker for me. A good print is only as good as the lab printing it. My equipment is all calibrated to match my printer. What is seen on my monitor is what the final prints WILL look like. If you take a CD of my images to walmart and get prints made, I can personally guarantee that they will not match colors, aspect ratios, etc. You aren't going to get a professional print. Then a couple takes those washed out, odd-cropped prints home and show their friends/family and there's my advertising. ...not professional. This isn't the market I want to cater to. Additionally, when digital negatives come out of my camera, they have received no processing. They are flat, unsaturated, unsharp, etc. I choose to do ALL of this processing in post, as to provide the highest quality final image. What you are paying for to have me shoot your wedding day is my time and talent as a photographer. When you order prints from me, I build into that cost, the extensive time it takes me to post-process all those images, to calibrate my equipment regularly to match my pro labs printers, to resize your prints for the sizes/ratios you order. In the end, this is how you end up with a killer product...not a kiosk-printer's rendition of my work. So, if I'm going to give away a CD of negatives, they are going to be just that...the negatives, having received none of this processing. In short, the prints from this CD are not going to look the way you want them to. I think, as a Bride/Groom, what you really need to do is decide what your ultimate goal is. Do you want cheap prints that you can pass around at will and do what you want with? OR do you want a professional, high-quality collection of memories from your most-important day? Ultimately, the answer to that question should help guide you to the right photographer. Talk to your photographer before hand. UNDERSTAND what you're getting, what your not getting and why. I spend hours with my potential clients doing this. If a B&G are not a match for what I offer, I have no problem being upfront about this and it always works out best for both parties in the end. Ask questions and get answers. If you don't like the answers move on to another photographer...BUT realize that it doesn't do anyone any good to complain about prices, not getting certain shots, not getting a certain style, etc... after the wedding. You should be absolutely confident in these things before putting down your deposit. Some other questions to ask yourself when considing asking a photographer to give away his/her work: -Will you ask the pastry chef to give you the top tier of cake for free? -Will you ask the limo driver to give you the last 1/4 of the trip for free? -Will you ask the reception venue to give you the back 20 tables/plates for free? -Will you ask the bar to give away spirits when you only want to pay for free beer? -Will you ask for 25% off of the dress or 3 of the tuxes for free? Wedding photographers are professionals too. They deserve to be paid for their work. Like Tess said, if professional images are not worth paying for to you, then you always have uncle Bob's and aunt Suzie's point-n-shoot images. A good wedding photographer WILL work with you and get you a wedding package that you love and that they can provide and still feed the family. I know I will. What I won't do, is give away my work or pretend to be able to provide something that I really can't or won't. Honesty is the BEST choice...always. -daniel

Being of mixed heritage, I have to hear Larry sing "I like big butts and I cannot lie" on a semi-regular basis! I must admit... most of my life I've been very uncomfortable, but J-Lo made me feel ok about myself!

Wonderful Hippi pictures, Larissa! Got any close-ups of Amputo? I love the trumpet varieties! And I think Basuto's real colors almost came through on that shot!

Speaking of music... and I'm really dating myself, here... I got to watch Styx and the Moody Blues in concert last night, on HDNET tv! They were most awesome!

I haven't even sucked down a full cup of coffee yet, so I'm not sure what I'm typing! Carry on...

lol I would kill to have J-Lo's tush. Want me to date myself on music? NKOTB all the way, bay-bee. I had their posters all over my room circa 3rd grade. They were to me what the Jonas Brothers are to my daughter. I'm so glad they made a comeback. Joey McIntyre 4 life. ;-)

I'm so old I saw Judas Priest in concert when they were a BACK-UP band for UFO!! Now, that's dating myself! Most people don't even know who UFO is! I graduated high school in 1979, and was around when partying was a whole different scene!

I went through most of life hating my rear end, which I thought was waaay too big! Now that's in fashion, I'm too old to show it off! LOL!

You're right. I have no clue who UFO is. LFO was in fashion when I was in high school :-) "I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch......" lol I love bubble gum pop. Sue me. Oh, and gangsta rap. Nothings cuter than a mom in a polo driving a minivan full of young ones enjoying some Ludacris. Now that Brecklyn's older we're listening to Disney Radio. Sirius satellite be damned.

UFO did songs like "Lights Out", "Doctor Doctor", "Too Hot To Handle", "Rock Bottom"... a little before your time, perhaps, but if you like good old rock and roll, it's worth a listen!

Don't classify me as over the hill just yet... my Ipod contains everything from hip-hop to classic rock, some blues, and even some pop... you'd be surprised what I like!

I have tattoos and piercings in places I'm not gonna mention, and I'm a dyed platinum blonde! I will never dress like the grandmother I am, and I can party with the best of them!

Age is a number... just a number!

UFO!!!! I graduated HS the same year Jodi. While I loved Rock, I eventually turned into a real disco boy. Grew up where they filmed Saturday Night Fever, Danced at Studio 54 (did way more than dance, but the kids are reading this post...LOL)I was also one of those New Wave nuts for a while, you know, green / blue pony tail, ala Duran Duran hair...scary, but damn those were some great times in NYC.

Larissa, that Basuto is beautiful even if you don't think you're getting the color correct. And Wedding Dance is gorgeous, have you tried a Ludwigs Dazzler yet? The little H. Larissa I have has not grown any leaves yet but the bulb seems to have grown quite a bit in size, can't wait for the sunroom to warm a bit more at night, that's when the growth will start. Lar, the Papillio babies are holding their own, and I think we may have talked about an aphroditie? they are recovering nicely from the bulbfly surgery and seem to be enlarging. I find the aphrodite to be evergreen, the forced dormancy last fall 07, was not appreciated by the bulbs. They are also repeat bloomers for me, 3-4 stalks a year. Spring and summer from surprisingly small bulbs for the amount of bloom.

Now, you're starting to sound like Jodi with her soil, back away from the Basuto...

Gotta get me a Basuto, Black Pearl, or even a Red Lion. Can't believe I have no solid red here! Zombie is showing signs of a stalk, Piccolo, and Jungle Bells (thanks for the JB Mariava)are as well. I've got a vittatum from Jane_artist that is also putting out roots and the bulb is enlarging but no leaf growth yet.

Most awesome, Chaz! Talk about your memories! Those were the daze! I'm sorry to say, disco was not my thing! I graduated right into heavy metal, and heavy partying! Went to a ton of rock concerts... I was quite the party girl! Simply mind-bending times, if you get my drift!! Probably why I didn't exactly graduate at the top of my class, but I wouldn't change a thing! My youth was extremely fun... and in fact, I refuse to grow up even now!

I don't have Black Pearl or Basuto... but I do have several Red Lions and a Red Pearl. I think that Red Pearl is almost as dark and beautiful as Black Pearl... and Red Lion is always a classic, as a plain red! Pamela and Rapido are also very nice reds, though a little smaller.

My Jungle Bells is very slowly trying to push up a scape, I think... and the Pink Diamond I recently got is also starting very slowly. The re-blooming Lady Jane just might pass them up and flower first!

Chaz, I really don't care what you send me. I love any and all bulbs :-) Frank sent me a Christmas Gift baby and it is growing leaves like CRAZY. I really need to share some pics. He would be so proud of his little dude!

Oooooo....Frank. I can't wait to see how many seeds it produced. I know they germinate easily because the lady I got them from was just letting the seeds fall to the potting soil and naturally do their thing. There were TONS upon TONS of seedlings.
