California Poppy -direct sow or WS?

I've just ordered some seeds. (late)
I was planning to direct sow them, since I have a fairly large (2 x 3 feet) area I want to cover with them.
And also bec. it is later than I would have wished.
but having read the thread on zinnias, I'm wondering maybe I should WS.
anybody sowing ca. poppy?

I received some Cal poppies from LittleoneFB (Fran) at a swap that she hosted years ago. She is a long time winter sower who lives near by and shares many of her seedlings with others. They were really pretty ones, "Linen White" and "Purple Gleam" (pastels, yum).

They have reseeded every year since! I get a nice border of them along the driveway. They reseed true to color, I get a mix of cream and lavender.

So I would say they seem to be pretty easy to WS and transplant, and they also reseed abundantly so direct sowing no doubt works well too - if you have plenty of seed.

I wintersowed california poppies once and never had to bother doing it again because they self sow so abundantly. If you have a lot seeds you should try both spring sowing some and direct sowing them to see what works better for you.

Prairiemoon, I don't think they need cold before germination, but they do seem to prefer cooler weather to bloom. I have sown mine late winter and early spring, and they sprout fine. I usually get blooms in early summer, then they bloom again in the fall. Linda

Yes, I used to have them, and they do re-seed. I gave up that garden, and find that I miss them. Can't wait for my seeds to arrive.
