A monster in the making. :O)

I winter sowed Astilboide Tabularis in early 2009 and they germinated. Forgot the container, but found it the other day and all the little Astiboides are there! Tons of them!

This is one of those plants that you have to think about space. The leaves can get up to 3 feet wide!! Where oh where... Going to be doing some major thinking about these when I transplant them today. :O)

LOL!! Can't remember... (Another gray hair just popped out!) If it wasn't through a trade, it had to be from Gardens North. That's the only place I order seeds from every year since I get everything else from trades.

Looks like we are in for a nice weekend of weather SilverKelt!! :O)

Are you familiar with cultivariance, wherein growth behavior of propagules reflects position of budwood on stock plants? There is also the vigor of seedling rootstocks, and how these affect the scions. Sure, not all the green, weeping Himalayan cedars prevalent in outlets and plantings here under multiple names (often as Cedar-of-Lebanon cultivars) aren't necessarily all from one introduction. Maybe the same variation pops up repeatedly in seed beds or appears on branches of otherwise normal trees - in fact I have noticed one such near me. But they are all similar enough that it could be a case of perhaps more than one clone of 'Repandens'.

A good grower it would appear! Will this particular cultivar differ? For example, the large specimen in the picture appears to have inherited more of the characteristics of the Serbian spruce whereas Will's plant looks more typical of the Blue spruce? Richard

Monster 4 o'clock tuber

I love four o'clocks and have a large patch of them behind my house. They smell so good and hummingbirs seem to really enjoy them as well. As long as you pull any seedlings that get into areas you don't want them 4 o'clocks are really easy to care for. I wouldn't bother soaking the seeds, just toss them whereever you want the plants to grow and they should sprout fairly quickly. The plants are very tough. Once my dad accidently roto tilled one and every chunk of that tuber stilled sprouted new growth. My friend didn't have much trouble getting this one out since it was growing in a raised bed away from other plants. It probably got as big as it did because the soil in that bed was at least 50% rotted mulch and very rich.

Well, Ken said we can't talk about GE, and I have to say that I've had a couple that just won't grow. On the other hand, I have three that are great growers, probably 3 to 4 feet across and just gorgeous! LOL. By the way, I love Liberty and don't have any problem growing it. I think it's one of my top ten favorites! Anyway, I'll mention three plants that have been a nightmare. The first is petasites. Though despised by some gardeners, in my opinion this is an awesome plant when it's given plenty of room and planted in the right location. It looks best in filtered shade with afternoon shade and plenty of moisture. (Otherwise, it will wilt every afternoon when the sun hits it.) Throw some slug pellets under it a couple times throughout the summer. The leaves will get humungous- I've grown some close to 4 feet in diameter. But BEWARE!!! It send out shoots which travel in every direction and grows fast, even in clay and poor soil! You'll have these things popping up all over before you can say "boo" unless you install a fool-proof root barrier to contain it. The second plant that will run you out of house and home is phragmites australis. You won't normally find this in a garden center and there's a reason why!!! This tall grass is commonly seen growing in ditches along the freeway. There is a native specie which is supposedly okay, but I have an introduced specie which has naturalized throughout the midwest that is...well, I'll say INVASIVE!!! I thought that a clump of this would look interesting in my flower garden, so I dug a hole 4 feet wide and 3 feet deep. I lined the sides of the hole with a root barrier (3 feet deep) but neglected to put a barrier on the bottom of the hole. Then I put a clump of this in the center. Later in the summer, I began seeing sprigs of this stuff popping up 6 feet away from the original clump! Hummm...what's going on here? To make a long story short, with a shovel I hand dug 8 yards of dirt out of the center of my flower bed in the process of tracing all the roots that were growing outward in every direction at a depth of 3 to 4 feet!!! I've NEVER, NEVER, NEVER seen a plant grow like that- a nightmare! (While I was trying to dig this thing up, I swore that it was growing faster than I could dig!)Wow, like playing with fire! The last plant, which I'm still fighting a losing battle with, is crown vetch. The Transportation Dept. uses this ground cover on steep banks along the freeway to hold the dirt in place. It loves poor soil and drought conditions! (The only thing that it doesn't like is full shade.) I have it growing all over because the previous homeowner spread a bag of seed to combat soil erosion on the hillsides along my driveway. The stuff is aggressive, hard to kill, and self-seeds in the fall. It makes a continuous mat 3 to 4 feet tall that's just about impossible to walk through it, and strangles out everything in its path including small trees. I don't recommend planting it! Don

Holy Toledo! That's a HUGE plant! Love it!

BTW - if I can grow petasites on my balcony, I know you'll find space for this one. (Of course, I had to give away the petasites - got entirely too big!)

Very nice tiffy. I have one similar to yours but the leaves are still small about 6" wide. However, Ellen calls it Rheum. Not sure if it's different.

Was wonderful today.. took today off to plant and keep adding to my rock wall..

I had to do some birthday shopping as well, 80% with planting so far..

I still have to plant the veggie garden as well.. If I want tomatoes this year will have to be bought ones =(.. the late freeze zapped mine.

I cant wait to see pictures of that plant!

It's also known as Rodgers leaf or Shield Leaf. I think the Rheum is a rhubarb plant? That's a nice one too!!

PV, Talking about big ones, how is that Inula doing? (Chuckle :O)

When I was a really 'green' gardener, I saw that plant advertized in a catalogue and I think it said it could tolerate some shade and I thought 'great for my yard'. Luckily, before I ordered it I mentioned it to one of my co-workers and you should have seen her eyes grow wide with amazement!! Then she drew my attention to the true size. Hope you have fun with it Tiffy. It should be a real conversation piece.

Oh, tiffy! I am heartbroken - mu inula did not make it thru the winter. I gave a seedling to a friend last year, and she says she doesn't see hers either. I still have some seeds, so will try again - think I'll sow them in the next couple of weeks.

You know how I love those BIG plants ...

That's great Northerner. The bigger the plant, the more Hostas I can take out of the gardens. The deers have eaten all the neighbours' plants and have been eyeballing mine...

Oh no PV. I thought for sure it would make it on your balcony. Mine are popping up everywhere.

Neil, Aren't those leaves grand? I bought another last year and the leaves are just as nice - a bit wider with more ridging and more of a lime colour. The flower on this one is suppose to be bigger.

You can do it anytime, but get ready for it to sulk big time!! If the leaves get ratty, just cut them back and new ones will grow. Oh, and should I mention the huge root system?? :O)
