too late to WS annuals in jugs?

First time WS - things got in the way and I just realized how far in the season it is and the fact that I've done nothing with the cosmos, zinnias, sunflowers - annuals.

I've been using water jugs. I know that cosmos will come up if I just plant outside but is it too late to sow in the jugs with success? Or is it ok, because of the heat/humid environment and they will germinate faster

Help!

ps - I'm in Massachusetts which seems to be spring challenged this year. The forsynthia just started blooming here this week!

Its not too late, we "officially" stop winter sowing by May 1st, but then we start spring sowing. Get to it, LOL

Dreams: Welcome! No, it's not too late to start. I see that although in NC you are zone 6. Perennial and hardy annuals go out now, tender annuals later. I am in zone 6 SW Ohio, and I start annuals in March and April, closer to my last frost date, so that they aren't damaged by late frost. Most perennials don't bloom the first year, but annuals will. What things were you thinking of sowing? There's is plenty of cool weather left for almost all, may be a little late for some (not all) trees or shrubs, there won't be much in the way of warmth for several weeks yet and especially not at night. I keep a rough frost calendar and we've had light frost May 1 more than one year, those cool nights will average out the 50's days for those things that require chilling. I'm still sowing perennials, have some to do this weekend with a bucket of potting soil to step over sitting in my kitchen.

bakemom - oh you are so sweet, thank you! I will update my page when I am finished here...I live on the coast of lake Erie, in that sliver of Ohio that some gardening books say is a zone 5 and some say is a zone 6. We are in the snow belt so some years we get very cold winters and some we have warmer snowy winters. Those lakes keep us in constant amazement in regards to our weather! LOL* I did plant some zinnias but I will do the same as with the impatiens, and I suppose I'm really only out $3 if they don't live! :) I will go ahead with snapdragons then, because I wanted to plant some of those too but wasn't sure when to start them. Know anything about sweetpeas? I've never planted them but they are so beautiful, I thought I might experiment.

You've got plenty of time. I sowed a few more today, but I'm not even halfway done. Just start with your perennials, and hardy/reseeding annuals, then save the tender annuals (marigolds, cosmos, zinnias, etc.) for last. Jump in, the water's fine : ) Bonnie

Linda, I'm in zone 5 as well and don't usually start wsing my zinnias and sunnies until around May 1st. We tend to get nights below freezing into the 1st 2 weeks of May so I always check the 10 day forcast. Last year I lost multiple closed containers of zinnias and Mexican sunflowers to a late cold spell. They sprout and grow so fast once the nights stay warm that starting them in May instead of April doesn't seem to have any affect on when they bloom.

Phew! I am so glad to hear that I am probably not too late sowing my annuals. I got most of my perennials done before the end of March, and they are coming up like gangbusters. But I do have a bunch of annuals I want this year too, and I was almost going to give up on the seeds and just buy at the nursery (or see what Fran has left after her swap).

But I think I will make a start on the annuals this week.

Wacky weather fer sure here in PA , 60's into January, then -20's, then ice storm, snow storm, rain, wind, now it hit 81 degrees here yesterday, fried my Monarda Ws'd.
So I guess you can call it Summer/Spring sowing now for me for the marigolds, zinnias dahlias, basil and whateverelse I find in the seed box.

Hi,

Just yesterday I sowed several containers with my 4 o' clocks and Datura as well, I think there is lots of time left to still sow....sow....sow
