I wonder why exotic star has not started growing yet??

I have several amaryllis growing on my window sill. Charisma, fairy tale and exotic star. They have all started to grow weeks ago, but nothing at all happening with exotic star.

It's been about 2 1/2 - 3 wks. Is this normal? What can I do to try to get it to start growing?

Mine was a little slower than my others as well, but it was well worth it! Sing to it (*lol*)

It's probably just concentrating on making roots. If the bulb looks green it'll be fine.

The very pollens came from this. My non-performing San Miguel's first flowers. When this seedling bloomed, I thought... "Ughhhh...such an ugly Exotic Star". LOL! Checking the tag later on made me realize that is was one of my "testing ploidy-doidy" seedlings that survived. Those were the days when I would pollinate every single flower of my exotics(diploids/triploids) with every single exotic pollen I have. It was a bad cross right from the start. I now believe that non-performing or Hippies that perform below average should not be used as parents. Save myself both headache and heartache later on. LOL! I'm done with that and in fact rested this season from pollinating the Hippies. Except the yellows which I am "trying" to develop. It's a long and winding road that could drain you out. Now I know why the earlier Hippie hybridizers abandoned their "dreams". Now don't let my words and experience discourage yourselves from your dreams. This is just me, my situation under my growing conditions. Every gardener and garden is different. I still and will always advice... "Pollinate what your heart desires. The 'written words' are there to guide you but do not let them limit you." Happy pollinating to all!!! Oh and Advanced Happy Thanksgiving too!!!!

Cat....I think I stick to tried and true entirely too much. I think I should be trying to find something a little different to grow like you and Bill. I've never heard of guinea hen flowers. I do like toad lilies but I tried one and it didn't make it through my winter. I hope you will post photos later. Bill...I never saw a slug in my yard until last year. We had a lot of rain that wouldn't let up and they started showing up. Where do they come from, out of nowhere? [g] You remind me of me... when I can't sleep in the summer, I will get up and go out in my pjs with the flashlight and a paper cup and look for earwigs, which I hate! They seem to love me for some reason. Just the same I enjoy being out there at that hour. You get to see all the night creatures and some of the fragrant plants make the trip worth it. And if there is a moon out, a warm breeze and it's very quiet, it's almost magical! And you can't see all your mistakes at night. [g]

Hello everyone! I am so excitied to read this post because I loved to starts grow seeds indoor and sit underlight! I think it is so fun doing it. Yes.. I had good luck with my daylilies seeds. I got those seeds last year and keep daylilies seeds in box and stored in ice box for a year! Then.. I wrapped seeds in damped loose paper towels and put them back in ziplock bags with named crossed. Then I put the ziplock bags in big plastic peanut butter jar and sitting on top of water heat tank until they sprouted. It takes one to two weeks. Depends on seeds! Then I planted sprouted seeds in good soil in 16oz. foam cups and sitting underlight. There is several different way to start grow daylily seeds. I got some daylily seeds from my girl friend who crossed her daylilies in AL. Hey James!!! Yes.. Yes.. the petunia seeds are soo tiny seeds. DO NOT COVER SOIL! Just try easy shake petunia seeds out of package and sit on top of Jiffy-7 and spray with warm water and then put Jiffy-7 in the tupperware lid and then sit on heating mat until sprouted. I planted Jiffy-7 in 16oz foam cups and sit underlight. I ordered Petunia Dolcissima Flambe from Park's Seed Co. I wish I know how to post pictures of babies. James..Can I send you email (pictures of babies) and you can post picture to show guys on the thread? Christie! Yes.. I ordered seeds and then recieved those seeds in few days! What is easiest is shrubs, well mulched with an organic mulch such as pine straw or shredded bark mulch and underplanted with a ground cover. Be sure it is well edged with a buried edging to keep the grass out. Make beds at least 5'-6' deep. In order to get reasonable suggestions we need your general location and hardiness zone. Here is how to add that to your profile so that it posts automatically next to your name like for cyn427 or mine and you don't need to remember to add it for every post. It will add to all your previous posts as well. Go to Your Houzz in the upper right of every page, click Edit Profile, and on the left side click advanced settings. Well down the advanced settings page is a blank labeled Climate Zone for Garden Forums, along with a link to find your zone. You can add info on your state or the nearest large city either here or on the profile page under the name posted, and you will get even better information since zone only relates to average coldest winter temperatures. Then return to the top of the page and click Done Editing. We also need info on the conditions in that spot. Does it get any shade such as from your house or other buildings or trees? If so, what time of day does it get shade? What is the soil like? Clay, sand, or just ordinary loam? Is there is hose bib AKA spigot close enough to make watering easy? Each kind of plant has its own preferred conditions, so choosing ones that will be happy there will make your life easier. Do you look at this spot in the winter? I'd so, consider adding something everygreen so it isn't only dead-looking sticks all winter.

I am sure that Exotic star bears H.papilio in its parentage (I assume that it be composed of H.papilio x H.neopardinumhref>.

H.papilio exhibits a rather slow formation of new leaves when it has undergone a reposal period.

I read elsewhere that H."Exotic Star" be a sport of H.papilio.
What do you think,

I have a "Pink Floyd" and a "Amputo" that haven't started growing yet either despite the fact that I started them the same time I started my "Red lion" and "Lemon lime" and they are done now blooming. I guess they're not ready to wake up yet...

I bought a Picotee late Nov. - promptly potted it - a nose is barely visible and remains the same way to this day! The bulb looks green and healthy however.

My Sugar Candy does this weird thing for me. I planted it in December - nothing. I planted it out in May - nothing. Nine months and it does not even bring a leaf. It is firm, green, but nothing is happening, no matter where it is. All the other hundreds are happy and green and blooming and stuff, but Sugar Candy is just sleeping and neither it dies, nor it shows any signs of action.

Sugar Candy is different/unusual. I was about to transfer mine to an 8" pot the other day. When I unpotted it, I was surprised to see it's roots. It has very TINY almost hair like white roots. Be very careful in watering it and potting mix must be light with very good drainage. I postponed repotting it anyway. I will try to take a pic and post it for you Soultan.

Exotic Star does takes it's time to wake up. Mine bloomed and waited for the warmer weather before it leafed out nicely. Once it gets started, it can be a very robust plant.

Exotic Star is waking up for me just as the others do. Completely normal.
The Sugar Candy bulb is in the ground. I planted it out by removing the dirt-ball from the pot and just putting it in the ground, so I did not change anything. It is sitting stable in the ground though. When I try to move it, it is grabbing it's hold, so I assume it has good root system.
