Lost and found...recovering from Pickering's news

Pickering's recent news sent me scrambling to see if I could replace the roses I had ordered through them in September. This year I had spread my orders around a bit and only had four on order from them. Two were easy to find elsewhere. The other two...not so much. I thought others might be in the same boat and thought we could post what has been difficult to locate in case others come across them in their search.

Please keep an eye out for:
R. primula
Belle sans Flatterie

Both were available in Vintage's fall releases, but I missed them while they were available.

I changed my order over to David Austin which had two I really wanted (including Munstead Wood!) and to Palatine which had another one I wanted. And the missing one from my Pickering order gave me an opportunity to order Pomponella Fairy Tale instead from Palatine--not a bad deal since I've been wanting Pomponella for some time now. So, all things considered, I'm doing fine now--though I feel sorry for the Pickering people.

Zaphod, I believe I saw Belle sans Flatterie at Long Ago Roses.

Hi jalal, I think pickerill's are about the first to leaf out in the spring. Mine (in zone 5) are about 10" tall now. Your's are sounding dead. When did you thin it last? They can get so overcrowded in just one season. If you haven't thinned it recently, I would do that, and pot it up and see what happens. Otherwise, I'd wait a bit longer for the weather to heat up, but it doesn't sound promising for your pickerill. Let us know how it turns out.

I too have tried every which way. I even ordered in the spring and rec'd them mid-May, with the temps already creeping into the low 90's. Never lost a one, though a couple were touch and go. I agree with Olga, the very best scenario is fall planting. Gives them a chance to put on good roots in the winter for abundant spring top growth. Pickering roses are awesome. I know I in a very small minority, but my one venture with Horitco has been very successful as well. Great plants, prompt shipping and all true to variety. Plus, all that were planted last fall as bareroot are blooming now. Hortico has varieties that you can't get anywhere else.

The issue Michael referred to was the same issue retailers have dealt with since the beginning of "shelf labeling". When products are priced individually, it doesn't matter how they're moved around on the shelves, as their pricing moves with them. When the SHELVES are labeled with no pricing on the products, moving them without moving the labels, results in confusion and miss pricing. There are laws in place preventing the public from being deliberately cheated using these issues. Reports from friends who visited them regularly at that time were that Heirloom didn't label the individual flats. They placed the name of the variety on the shelf the flat was placed on. When flats were moved, often the names were not, resulting in some serious misidentifications. Fortunately, that practice was corrected, but it took some time for them to admit the errors and fix them. Kim

Hmmm, I have a clone which does not have much of a fragrance at all - certainly not as carrying as my briar roses....and it can be a teeny bit unhappy in East Anglias blasting North-easterlies so, in a comparison between the asian yellows, primula does not beat any of the hugonis clones (Headleyensis), nor hybrid pteracanthas such as Earldomensis. Top marks for Cantabridgiensis (pteragonis hybrid) although ecae has been as temperamental as primula and, although it is ubiquitous, xanthina var spontanea (aka Canary Bird) is still one of the most reliable early yellows. Honestly, bman, you can hardly go wrong with any of them.....and while you are about it, for the daintiest and prettiest pale yellow, take a look at the little spinossisima, Dunwich rose - a diminutive sweetie with massive charm. These roses are utterly beautiful and perfect harbingers of spring (primula is the first rose to flower in England) - there is nothing so lovely as seeing those pale yellow blossoms and bright green leaves reiterated with an underplanting of the common primrose, primula vulgaris (my little joke, Primula and primula).....and for fragrance, the fresh scent of primrose is subtle, nuanced and redolent of the all that is new, sparkling and hopeful about the casting off of winter gloom.

Yep, replaced mine with a Palatine order as well. Of the six I had ordered from Pickering, Palatine had 3 of them. I'm also on the hunt for R. Primula which was part of my Pickering order :(

Tammy, try Greenmantle for R. primula. They carry it but may already be sold out. Greenmantle is old-fashioned, you have to call to see about availability. Marissa is very nice to talk to and very knowledgeable, so the call is always fun.

I was lucky enough to get R. primula from Pickering last year. This is a wonderful rose and HUGE now. Also, it has been raining today, and the lovely scent of incense is blanketing the whole garden. Yum!

I am with you. Placed an order with DA and Regans to make up for some. Emailed Palatine to add to my order for a few but have not heard back from them. Still looking for a source for White Cap and Velvet Fragrance. Heirloom has it but I was hoping for something bigger than their small bands as both of these are going in premium spots at the front of my property surrounded by larger roses and I would like to not wait for them to fill out. Might be trying Firefighter and Cloud 10 from Edmunds instead.

I had Velvet Fragrance on order, too. Ended up ordering Dreams Come True (Senator Burda) from Hortico. It's supposed to be very fragrant and, from what I can see, the rose looks very nice. My last roses from Hortico (two years ago) were among the biggest in my garden this year so here's hoping...

I've grown Velvet Fragrance for several years (own root) and in this climate, it's a very good, very healthy, very fragrant red HT. As a garden plant, it is worlds better than the old Legend. Kim
