#2. Roses need energy to produce their beautiful flowers. They get that energy from the sun. They will not thrive and bloom in an area with no direct sun.

#3. Only species (wild) roses grow "true" from seed. You cannot grow the varieties mentioned from seeds; you must grow them from a cutting that has rooted (or a grafted plant). Many mail order and internet nurseries sell roses.

I grow a lovely species fuchsia -- F. hatschii -- often sold as F. regia. It (and several other fuchisas) climb well, and tolerate shade while still blooming.
Many fuchsias are troubled by fuchsia gall mite, but F. hatschii is not, and I recommend it highly.

I have ZD, she is thornless. I am growing her on the NW side of my home, up a deck. She will get afternoon sun and difused sun the rest of the day, but not full sun. I haven't had her long enough to say how the bloom is. She had many buds last spring, but the Easter Freeze took care of that.

I can tell you she's grown about 8-9 feet. I do spray and ZD has shown that it will get black spot and powdery mildew in my yard.

I always thoght that "shade-tolerant" tag is a little bit commercial, so "no sun-no flower" explains it better.

buford, sorry for the frozen buds.I will search and read more on ZD but I was hoping to hear that I can get full bloom in shade.In this situation, I will consider another plant for the area.

Most roses need at least 6 hours of sun a day and preferably more to bloom really well. Some may "tolerate" less but won't bloom as much. Even roses classed as thornless aren't completely thornless. You may do better with some other type of vining plant that will climb for you and will love the shade and keep the children safe.

What about Trachelospermum jasminoides. Evergreen, happy in the shade, no thorns, and has fragrant flowers in springtime.

I don't know if you are in a zone where you can grow camellias, but some of them can be trained on a trellis. I have 3 beautiful trellis areas on the west side of my house. I have tried numerous roses on them over the past 5 years, and none have been truly happy getting only afternoon sun, even the so called shade tolerant ones.

I quit fighting nature and started growing sasanqua camellias on them. They are sun tolerant as long as they get irrigation, and I think it is going to work out much better than forcing a rose to grow in less than ideal conditions.

Roses really prefer full sun, starting in the morning. They can take some afternoon shade late in the day, but that's about all the shade they will tolerate and stay healthy and blooming.

I tried blue jasmine, it was not happy at that point but never tried Trachelospermum jasminoides.Actually, I really love camellias and always wanted to have one.I can't believe how I missed that option :)
I will search for camellias and will check which one is most suitable.I will start with sasanqua.

I had always thought that roses, especially Chinas, want and need full sun. Here in Southern California, about 25 miles inland and 2100 feet elevation (or maybe 2400, I always forget), the rose Mutabilis is doing extremely well with about 4 hours in the summer and now about 1-2 hours of morning sun. It's still blooming, no disease and constantly putting out new growth. Abraham Darby, right next to Mutabilis, is similar, although it's blooming very little now. They're close to the house wall and I don't know if that makes a difference. I've had Mutabilis in full sun before at several locations and it always seemed stressed. I wonder if a higher elevation and very low humidity might be two important contributing factors.

I agree that your no rose will be happy with shade most of
the time. I do grow some roses in that situation and they
are pretty tough. They don't die or anything. However, the
blooms are few and far between.

I wanted to answer the question about "thornless, shade
tolerant climbers" anyway, though. My vote is Madame Alfred
Carriere. I grow mine on a west-facing wall, so it gets
sun half the day at most, although the very top of it (now
that it is about 15' high) does now stay in sun all day
long. However, even before then it seemed to do fun with
less-than-full sun and it has a reputation for that, which
is why it was planted where it is.

This rose has almost no thorns. I can't say zero, because I
have seen a handful of thorns, but I am honestly surprised
when I see a thorn. I could go outside right now and I'd
probably have a hard time finding a thorn to photograph.
I have this rose next to a walkway and it is always
"reaching" out to grab me and it's great that it's thornless
because I don't worry about it unlike, say, my bougainvillea
which has destroyed my clothes or my Sombreuils (which I
have dubbed SOBs) which are quite possibly the thorniest
roses known to man.

You should give Heritage a shot. While not a true climber, it can be grown as a short climber even in my zone. It is nearly thornless and is by far the most shade tolerant rose I have. It flowers constantly with only 2-3 hours of direct sun per day. I also love Zepherine Drouhin, but you will not get many flowers after the first bloom in a shady location. Hope that helps.
