Lovely photos of beautiful roses. The rain adds a different dimension, giving the roses a softer, more mysterious quality.

Yes, and rain is so "unfamiliar" here; I was really taken aback when I noticed the haunting quality it lent the roses, especially the heavy-petaled Austins.

Judy, thank you for your kind words. Alnwick and Carding Mill are among my favorites as well.

Ingrid, so far Carding Mill seems like a fantastic rose for a hot dry climate. Heartbreakingly gorgeous large cupped flowers. I absolutely LOVE this rose when it blooms the color shown above. But Carding Mill is a chameleon that blooms in many colors. And sometimes a given bloom will even change color within the course of a day. Since I'm very particular about color scheme, we'll see if Carding Mill makes the final cut for a spot in the Garden of Forgotten Dreams. If it doesn't, it will only be because I really want an apricot or a whisper pink rose in that spot. The photo below shows a few of the many colors of Carding Mill.

jannike, I love that last picture of Carding Mill. I think this is a rose I need to acquire again at some point, along with Grande Dame, another great hot-weather rose.

Ingrid, Carding Mill can definitely take my breath away. For my area as well, it's a very good rose. And for a spot where you want variation in color and daily surprises, it's the perfect pick.

By the way, Wolleron Old Hall has a very similar bloom form and habit, but it's a much taller rose.

Jannike, your photos and roses are lovely. My favorite photo I took last summer of my roses has raindrops on it. I find it to be very calming.

Michaela, what a gorgeous picture. I really like white roses that have a little bit of color in the middle to warm up the stark white. The raindrops add a lot to the impact of the picture.

jannike, I ordered Carding Mill a few days ago and really look forward to having it again after some years. I hope it will be as pretty as yours.

Very pretty picture, Michaela -- I love the champagne colored glow. Our Claire Austin also seems to glow from within, and I'm including a picture below.

Ingrid, I use decomposed granite for pathways and other areas where I don't want anything to grow. You have this same unsustaining material as a major component of your native soil. And yet you grow such beauty from it. And create haunting compositions by juxtaposing the sweetness of your roses against the challenging yet spectacular terrain of your granite hills.

I can't wait to see what you do with Carding Mill. And if it doesn't meet your expectations, I have no doubt you'll find something that will.

Ingrid, I do too! It was covered in blooms this year even though it was it's first year planted so I am anxious to see it next year. I am hoping to find some more pale roses that fade to white.

These pictures were taken before the drenching rain we're experiencing now. I'm glad there weren't too many roses in bloom to be spoiled by this downpour that is so much greater than what was predicted here.

Oh my goodness. What a surprise to end the day finding all these wonderful "favorite things" -- I love it! Creating and sharing beauty; everyone here seems to have an interest in that.

Michaela, you and I are sharing the uplifting experience of finding some new roses that don't "sleep" after they're newly planted. I expected these roses to do not much of anything this first year. Instead, they're lending a maturity to the new "Garden of Forgotten Dreams" that's making me so happy. From my early observations, though, I do think Carding Mill performs better in heat than it does when the weather cools.

Msdorkgirl, is your Grand Dame a prolific bloomer? I've been seeing pictures of this rose exploding with blooms, and wonder if that happens commonly.

Ingrid, how warm and inviting to share your cherished antiques -- exquisite! You say you don't have many roses blooming, but the ones you have are gorgeous. I especially love the picture of Aunt Margy's Rose.
