what is safe to plant now in zones 5 & 6

Hi everyone, I have been planting out poppies all over the place but what else is safe for these zones? We could

certainly have a frost at any time so are there babies that

we are growing (annuals) that are okay to go in now? I just looked at the huge sea of green that will need to go in as I was watering and thought what could go in now.

Our last frost date is around May 15 - 18th.. I usually plant out annuals around Mother's day, keeping in mind that I'm also checking the extended forcast for the low temps. I wouldn't put out the annuals yet..

I'm not sure about your weather in zone 5. But here, with wintersown plants, I'll plant out perennials hardy to my zone early, as well as hardy annuals. A few things like bachelor buttons or larkspur are OK with frost. Others, like snapdragons, petunia, clarkia, alyssum, or even nasties will take a light frost OK.

I wait until May for really tender stuff, like zinnia.

I would practically plant any thing that that does not require the fruits to fully ripen. Another issue is that , zone numbers have very little significance when it comes to summer gardening. More important than zone number, is the temperature pattern and the average first frost date. Therefore, for example, you can plant summer squash, cukes (no melons , no winter squash, no eggplants..), basils, small fruited peppers.

Four of my five did survive the winter but all died back to the ground. I thought they were dead, but patience paid off and they sent up new growth from the roots. Now with some rain and heat they are catching up and are all between 3-4'. They normally get to be 6-8' by the end of the season when I cut them back to 1-2' in the spring (when the woody part didn't die back.) Don't know the variety since I started them from seed . They all have that light lavender colored flowers. I think they will bloom fine with the rate they are growing now. Store bought butterfly bush never lasted more than a year or two for me, but the seed grown ones are still going strong. The winter sure was hard on things though. My trumpet creeper that normally completely covers and drapes down from our our large willow tree snag that is 15-20' tall has died all the way back the ground. There is just a few feet of growth at the base and it looks pretty sad.

I am in zone 6 in southern Ohio. It is hot but you can still start peas. I planted mine in seed starter cells on my deck and kept them well watered (be careful though because too much water will rot them) so the soil temp wasn't too hot. They grew just fine and I transplanted them in my garden last week. They are still doing well. Along with peas I have broccoli growing on my deck in seed cells. I kept them in the shade but as soon as they started sprouting moved them to a sunny spot (they will get leggy fast if you don't). You could always pre-sprout seeds in a damp paper towel in the house if you are worried about the temperatures. I will plant lettuce and spinach but not yet, it is still too hot. Btw, I live in zone 6a, close to areas in zone 6b.

Sorry to hear they are not doing well. As long as he got the entire bulb and watered them in well, they should be fine for next year. I'm wondering if he dug a bit shallow and they are recovering their roots? I moved some around for next year and took a picture. They are sulking in the sun but I expect them to perk up with the big drink of water I gave them. Ideally, you should have a big clump of dirt all around (not see the bulb like here, but I was digging his neighbor and dividing) so as not to disturb the roots.

Bachelor buttons and poppies are very hardy. I had a wildflower mix in which some plants were growing out the top hole of the milk jug! I figured those should go out now.

I am thinking about planting out snapdragons soon as well, once I figure out where I want to put them. They're really tough. Alyssum and Aster Crego are great too.

I would be interested in hearing what others have to say. There may be more things I could plant out that I've been waiting on.

Karen, have you had good luck planting out petunias early? Last year, I had petunias survive extremely low temps in containers, but they weren't planted out yet.
