My cat ate all the leaves off my sapling

Hi,

I have been growing a sapling since early spring, when I discovered it in a pot growing completely on its own.. and now my cat has eaten all the leaves off of it. Can a young sapling like this survive without leaves?

A) What variety of tree is it - evergreen or deciduous?

B) Where do you live?

C) Is the cat alright?

If you live somewhere that the trees (and this tree in particular) lose leaves for the winter anyway, it will probably leaf out next spring just fine - it just lost its leaves a bit early this year. Don't let it dry out until then, esp. if in a pot - keep watering it when the soil is dry down an inch or so. If you are somewhere that gets HARD freezes, then protect the pot and roots from freezing over the winter by burying the pot in the ground, surrounding it with dry leaves, or the like. Whatever you do, protect it from mice or bunnies chewing on the bark over the winter.

A) it doesnt matter what kind it is ...

B) it doesnt matter where you live ..

C) WHO CARES ABOUT THE CAT ... !!!!

it will either survive or it wont .... continue caring for it as dib's noted.. as all other similar plants ... and dont worry about it ... you really didnt expect 100% success.. did you????

do you have a plan on how to overwinter pots in your zone ????

Nelson, next time, get a dog. Interestingly, even though I can't detect a scent from my biflorum, if left outside it becomes covered in flies. Just because we can't detect a scent, it might well be extremely enticing to the-cat-who-used-to-be-Mimi. You may also want to entertain the possibility that the-cat-who-used-to-be-Mimi has fallen further into a deep psychological abyss brought on by your cavalier response to the role reversal you subjected him/her to at such a young, impressionable age and has become murderous. The-cat-who-used-to-be-Mimi should seriously consider pleading insanity. The earlier bed wetting may just have been a prelude to what is yet to come. Sleep with one eye open and don't leave small children alone with that cat.

I'm not sure what your picture is supposed to be showing that pertains to BS and missing leaves. What I see is a beautiful rose with many leaves, including new leaves, and lots of gorgeous blooms. So what is the problem? If you are asking what to do about BS, get some Bayer Garden Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs (get that name--NOT one of the other Bayer products)--at Lowes or online. Buy a small sprayer container for about $20 -- I got mine at Home Depot but other similar stores probably also carry them. Follow Bayer's directions carefully, but make sure you watered the roses deep and well the day before, and pick an early morning time for spraying, before the breeze picks up and swats you in the face with fungicide. Spray with that once or twice at 10 day interval, and probably you will have killed the BS. And with really hot weather coming, you may not have any more BS attacks until cooler weather in the Fall becomes more conducive the BS. But based on your pic, I'd say keep on watering your rose and enjoy it! Kate

Last year I bought a a pepper plant from a local fair. I came home, put it on the balcony, and went inside to find the bag of soil I had, so I could pot it up. When I came back, the cat had eaten every single leaf on the plant. It was probably my best producing plant last year. It threw multiple leaves at the spot each previous leaf was, and most of them became branches. It ended up very bushy. I'd guess your Jalapenos, assuming they have good roots, will be fine.

Thank you for all the comments, very appreciated. This wasn't a bought tree, we actually germinated the seed, that's the main reason why it was indoors, also, because we live in a very heated city (surpassing 120F during summer) and it's also very dry, just a small hand full of plants can actually survive full sunlight here, Since it was so small we were afraid the sun and heat would kill it so we thought of keeping it indoors until summer ended. Lately the temperature's been nice (around 95F max) so I guess it's time to finally take it outside :) Thank you for your advice! To those who asked me about recently moving it, the sapling has always been next to a window but since it has grown a lot during the past weeks I guess now it need more sun power, hehe.

Have a Winged Elm adjacent to an arbor and noticed it was missing leaves on branch about 7-8 ft above ground. One day I discovered the cat on top of arbor chewing the leaves off the branch. That branch still has no leaves/assume it died.
Most of my trees that have lost all their leaves (ususally from grass hoppers not cats) usually releaf at least once before they croak completely. The bigger they are the more of this abuse they can take. Sometimes they wait until next spring before refoliating.

There is a good chance that if it is not a conifer the thing will push out new leaves at some point. Complete defoliation does not always mean death. Wait and see, really.
