Aconitum Monkshood Seedlings

I wintersowed monkshood again this year, because I couldn't stand the failure of the last several years. After pulling the weeds out of the pot, I noticed two plants that I could not identify. They had two somewhat heart-shaped leaves. I could not find any monkshood seedling pictures on the internet, so I thought somebody might be able to help. Sorry about the lack of a picture. If I get the time, I will post one.

It could be, they are KINDA heart shaped, but they are sorta pointier. I dont have a picture, but I do have several sprouts.

They sometimes self sow here, depending on which aconitum/monkshood. You might try Fall sowing, giving them a warm moist period before the chill.

I know this post is pretty old, but I'd love some monk's hood if you have any more. I unfortunately don't have any of the plants you requested here. I have several species of euphorbia, Senecio cylindricus, African sumac, Argintin mesquite, two types of wandering jew and possibly something else if I look around. Please let me know if you have any more and if you'd like to trade.

I am trying these seeds and I sowed them last January, left 2 weeks at 70F, and then I put them in the refrigerator around the end of January. I took them out of the refrigerator today, and this is how the tray looks like as I opened the baggy: The little seedlings actually are not Monkshood, but they are Jacob's Ladder seedlings that I planted in one of the 9 cells and they survived in the dark of the refrigerator for almost 2 months!!! What concerns me are thos white moldy spots because I think I have lost some seeds here. I have 70F in my apartment and I definitely would not want my place to be left at 50F, so I will have to see if they can germinate at this temperature. Outside it gets high 50s in the night and low 80s during the day. Would it be better if I leave the tray outside? I hope I will have at least one plantlet!!! I'll keep you posted. Rino

Hi Tepelus & garden friends! I have a question about harvesting the Acontium seeds: I have several green pods on my plants that I've been anxiously watching for weeks now...and watching...and watching...and nothing seems to be changing with them. What should I expect to happen? Its already well into the 20s here at night and Im hoping to get seeds from these beautiful plants but I dont know what to look for! (note: there are some black, shrivelled parts in with the nice fat green pods, I figured these weren't any good...now Im wondering, are THESE the seeds I want?) Confused, Kerry

I have that same fall blooming monkshood; love it cause it blooms that beautiful blue after everything else is done. I'm always worried that the frost will get to it before it has a chance to bloom but even with a snow cover it seems to do well. I find the other summerblooming monkshood to be so floppy but arendsi is a sturdy performer and looks good all summer. BTW, I always have read that monkshood don't move well but I moved her wuthout any problem a few years back.

I just had one show up in my garden last yr. i assume dropped by a bird. I didnt notice it until it bloomed.

I have been WSing Monkshood for 3 years (this my 4th season) and could never get even one sprout. This year the "stars were aligned" - - I have 6 sprouts in one container and 8 in another!

The ONLY thing I can think of that I did differently this year was that, for the first time, the seeds went in Milk jugs instead of the clear salad/spinach boxes. Or maybe they were somehow "better" seeds? (one from trade, one purchased.) Who knows? I just hope I can keep them alive and healthy and they they grow and flower so I can collect seed for next year.

I received 5 different varieties in a trade this year. They had been stratified and were sprouting before I received them through the mail. I was sceptiful but they arrived in good shape so I planted them and the little buggers took right off. I didn't realize they were hard to start. Is everyone stratifing their seeds?

They worked best when I took them directly off the plant and into the ground. They dont like to dry out.

I noticed a reseeder in my gardens last year so when the plant went to seed I planted some right against the foundation as I took them off the plant. Quite a few have sprouted. :O)
