How do you keep them from getting lost?

I have some plants that are ready to plant out but I'm concerned about how I plant them in 4 inches of much without it swallowing them. How do you do it? I've never planted anything so small before.

Do you need to mulch now?
I don't mulch beds until June. I will lay a thin layer of mulch (cut grass or straw) around tomatoes and lettuces, ect. to prevent soil splashing, but that's it.
No. 1. Thick mulch prevents the soil from warming up if laid too early
No. 2 slugs, roly-poly's and earwigs live in mulch and destroy little seedlings.

I always give them enough time to grow and warmer soil helps to achieve that :D

Oh my....I think I made a mistake. I laid a ton of wood chips in my beds the last couple of weeks (cardboard under them), now I don't want to plant in them if the bugs are going to eat my babies. I wish I would have known.

I would suggest what we did up in Yreka and Weed, where the wind whistles down the valley...put the containers up within 'railings' of tightly-strung thin rope and clip the pot or cage to both ropes. Presto, pots stay up. Without a cage, though, I don't guarantee the plants will! Hope that helps!

How do I keep the birds from getting tomatoes and garden veggies

Last year I lost some tomatoes to birds, but they leave the leafier vegetables alone. At first I was concerned, but then so many tomatoes came in that the bird damage portion was negligible. Acceptable losses. This year I simply planted so much extra that I wouldn't care if I lost any to the birds. And you know what? They're not bothering any of the vegetables this year. At all. What's different is: 1) I'm growing berries this year. They attack those instead. (And those need netting). 2) My neighbors are feeding the birds. 3) It's been raining a lot, providing many more insects. I welcome the birds to the garden -- they've been helping keep the pest population down. So maybe the strategy is to give them something else to eat, and allow extra for any minor bird damage. I've got to say, bird netting might prevent them from getting to the bugs, and bugs are worse. It's also a real pain to get in and out of the netting (having to deal with it with blueberries.) And its sad when the first critter gets tangled in the net and dies. An alternative to a bird net for vegetables is a crop cover fabric. This only works for short vegetables, and if the bugs haven't laid eggs yet. It's easier to work with, and critters don't get tangled.

How do you keep a nepenthes from getting to leggy?

I have a lot of plants and I buy peat and perlite in bulk. Lowes or just about any big box store or nursery has bails of peat moss. Premier was the brand on the last 2 bails I bought. The name Turba or Tourbe is often on the package. Google "sphagnum peat moss lowes" for an example. Plain perlite without fertilizer may be a little harder to find. Nurseries carry it but you may have to visit several before finding the 100% perlite. The brand "Ferti-lome" comes to mind. No do not place a nepenthes in full sun. Under a tree in a hanging basket would be perfect. 95 is not a big deal. How do you keep paths from getting overgrown?

I have 5 acres with 4 or 5 walking trails that are about 2 feet wide I just bring hand clippers with me and cut away a few small branches here and there, once every few weeks. For the weeds my daughters and I each carry a stick and beat them down as we walk, it goes really fast.

Do you think you can rake it away for a little while or at least most of it? Even if you don't have alot of slugs or earwigs in your yard it would still help you not lose your seedlings and get your soil warmer :D

I agree with vera. In the spring, I push back (or remove) any remaining mulch so that the ground can warm up faster.

You don't want mulch around your seedlings/sprouts. It just gives bugs a hiding place. Bare, hot ground is the best defense against slugs, in my opinion.

I do use a cup ring (I plant the cup the seedlings are in - with the bottom cut off - or I cut a cup in half and push it into the soil for protection) around my new transplants.

Shasta, push the mulch back a good 4 inches away from your new transplants and they should be fine.

Okay will do, thanks for the help. I thought these chips would keep the ground warm, so I'll rake it away next month when I chunk & plunk!!! I can always put a can of DH's beer out for the slugs :)

Well, I guess I messed up. I had a brand new area I turned into a flower garden (about 30 x 120) I had mulch brought in and spread out to about 4 inches deep because I didn't want to deal with weeds coming up. Now what do I do? Do I keep them in pots until they get bigger?

proudgm, you could create pockets of soil in the mulch for your sprouts. I would use a fairly dense soil (not potting mix) so that it holds onto moisture for a while. Otherwise, if your mulch is made up of large pieces you will be watering 2 or 3 times a day.

As the season progresses that mulch will break down and be a good growing environment for your plants.

Depending on how loose the mulch is, I would create large pockets of soil, say 6" wide and 6" deep.
