Bells of Ireland: no germination

Has anyone in my zone or close to my zone, been able to get these seeds to germinate. I got like 3 containters, 2 WS'd and the third spring sowed. I tried these last year, got no germination. What is the deal with this flower?

Hi...I'm in zone 5 but I had success sowing these. I sowed them at the end of February. I didn't soak or stratify and barely covered the seeds. I noticed 3 little sprouts towards the very end of March. Now at the end of April I have 4 more tiny sorouts in the same jug. Unfortunately I didn't think to record the number of seeds sown so I can't be certain of the germination percentage. Seems weird that they would sprout so far apart but maybe there is hope for yours?? Good luck...I hope you have success. They are such beautiful flowers!

I tried them a few times. I got some sprouts but very low germination. They fried when hot summer weather came. I got a (very) few volunteers.

Maybe they'd do better with direct seeding, but I don't know. Not the best plant for this area anyway, as they don't like it hot.

I don't know snail vine, but I can always tell my bells from other seedlings. Their leaves are thicker than most, are a pretty bluish-green with lighter veining, and are somewhere between round and square, i.e. wide rather than long. I think they resemble the adult plant more than most seedlings. Compared to many of my other seedlings, they just have a straight,strong and determined look about them, if that makes any sense to you. I hope snail vine doesn't have the same look or I've just confused you further! The links recommended by valiche sound great - they're my next stop. I'm having one of those "is it a weed, or is it something I planted?" moments in the garden this morning.

I used a combo of what I collected and I also bought a ton from ebay so I just combined them. I think I did 2 gallon milk jugs of them and I got 5-6 seedlings. But what surprised me is that I had volunteers where I planted the first year. So this year I did not even bother to collect seeds. I am going to let mother nature try her hand since she is the expert in this field of work. But I might try sowing more this year just to see if there is any germination. I will just a very heavy sowing of them. At least one or two is bound to germinate and if I get more so be it. Paula

The baptisia I fretted over last year b/c of no sign of life, has prominent purple shoots that shot up and cast aside last year's stems. Asian lilies don't usually show up this early for me either. Fluffy green foliage is apparent on some tall, early yellow ones. My part-shade garden only has a couple of blue forget-me-nots blooming. I have tons that have not even sent out flower stems yet. Purple "Homestead" verbena have started to bloom.

Well, thanks for reminding me. Yes, last year we had two seasons: winter and summer. And, so true about the peonies and iris. The fruit farmers here suffered a huge loss last season because it went from freezing temperatures, and up in the 80s when the fruit trees were in bud, and then we had a hard freeze. I don't even remember the forsythia being in bloom. This is usually a sign of spring for us here. Some growers have better luck winter sowing Bells of Ireland. They like the soil to be cool; and, as you mentioned the soil warmed up pretty quick in May. The Canterbury Bells weren't happy either. We moved pretty good size plants to the field in April thinking they would still get enough cold and slight frost. But, the Agrostemma, (which were smaller plants and really like to have a light frost as well) did fantastic when we planted them in the field in April. Here's hoping we actually have a spring this season. And, an autumn as well. Trish

ladyrose, if you dump it in a flower bed, you might get some sprouts.

I have trouble with these also. Two years ago I had no germination.

I had some germination last year - like three sprouts - and got a few blooms, but nothing great - although the problems with the blooms was probably due to my neglect after they germinated, not any weakness of their own!

This year, nothing. I was all excited about a few sprouts in the jug, but they turned out to be weeds. Sigh.

I think these are going the way of KMOTGG for me, unfortunately!

And yes, definitely dump the jugs in a flower bed - you just never know!

Those Bells of Ireland are easy as pie to germinate outside in the beds in our area. They get a little mildewy looking so make sure air is around them.

I had only 2 germinate in my container - but I planted the whole container into a large pot, and just now am seeing 3 more seedlings. I think it's a bit finicky, and comes up in spurts.

The only thing that has come up in mish-mash is Zinnia's and Sunflowers. I'm hoping something will show.
