I'm in zone 5 and it's been snowing all day and only 28F right now. More snow tomorrow. And I've got 22 jugs sprouted. I've thrown a tarp over them for the next couple of days. I'm not anticipating any probs. They had worse than this before. I'm a newbie too this year so I'm trusting all the 'old guard' on advise. TQB - I'll bet our babies will be fine.

We are getting that tommorow night here so moving any annuals that have sprouted ( my cosmos) and all my tomato sprouts in side a hay trailer that is not heated. I put the jugs in milk crates to day to make it a bit easier to move them in and out for a few nights.

I'm not doing squat. If a tarp makes you feel better, then do it.

If I had cosmos and toms, I would do something, but my little soldiers are made of sterner stuff.

If their mommies are sprouting new leaves (lupins, poppies, echinaceas, lychnis..) in your gardens, then the seedlings will be fine. Tenders like tomatoes, cosmos, etc, that aren't volunteering yet may need some cover. I don't spring sow any annuals until late April, early May. (But that's me, from a cold Canadian experience).

Yep, it's making me feel better, although it's 11:30 and it's only 34 so maybe it won't be so bad. I did throw a tarp over and yes,kiddo1, I do trust the experienced ones here. Everything they've told us so far has proven true. Are you taking the tarp off during the day? I figured that's what I'd do. I don't have any tomatoes sprouted yet.

I had snow and freezing weather. I did nothing. I checked today and the sprouts are still there. I still have my tops on (with the lids off or a vent hole).

I am just lazy and figured the ones that survive will be strong.

I did have ONE salvia plant that I moved closer to the house to ease my anxiety. No covers tho.

There is onw cucumber sprouted out there, I dunno if its gonna be OK, but I left it be. Well see!n There plenty more cuke seeds for resowing later.

I will check later and see how my babies fared. I covered the containers with a row cover, as well as the cool weather veggies in my garden bed. I know spinach survives even the teens, but it seems like I lost some kohlrabi and lettuce last time when it got that cold. At least it only got in the 20s for us last night.

I am concerned about the tomato sprouts, but have back-ups if they don't make it. I will report my findings later.

My toms and tenders are in the hoophouse. Everything else can live or die according to their own choosing. Tomorrow, ALL the perennials will be planted out if I can get it done in 3 hours. No more freezing temps in the 10 day after tonight for us.

It's Tuesday night and we are expecting more snow as part of the "winter weather advisory" we have been under since yesterday. The temps have gotten down around 20-ish with wind chill. So imagine my fear as I tiptoed toward all my jugs-what would I find? I didn't get to cover them last night, but to my utter joy I don't see anything suffering! I have a variety of annuals, veggies and herbs - I left the lids on the jugs and have the containers in plastic bags yet. ( I know - they really should have been upgraded before now to a more open environment)So, I scooted them all together, put the jugs in a window box together and covered them all with sunbrella fabric. I don't want to risk them staying out so unprotected for another night! I love WS - and love to read about everyone's "journey" on this road!!

Well, another freeze tonight. I did cover everything and will again tonight just because I'm a WS "weenie"..and newbie AND a weenie! But I was SO happy to see them all good this morning and basking in the afternoon sun today. All tops are still on..I figure I'll baby them until next week then they're open for good. My garden isn't ready to plant anyway, so why not keep 'em sheltered for now? I was proud to see my spinach so perky today :)

I figured most things would be fine, but was worried about my tomatoes. However, the tomato sprouts made it! I had some tomatoes not make it another year, but that was the time we had a late freeze in the teens, not the twenties.

I checked on some hardy annual sprouts I had planted out in pots, uncovered, that made it. The pots are in a somewhat sheltered spot, so perhaps this contributed to it, but still those sprouts must be pretty hardy. I think I will do more planting out next week.

Also, in the midst of this cold, somehow I ended up with columbine sprouts from seed I saved last year from my WS'd columbine!

Glad to hear everything made it mogirl...so far I'm good also.

I am a ws weenie too...lol..it is my second year,but I still have my issues!:P

We had snow on the ground the last two days and I did lose some volunteer CA poppies even though they are on a south facing hill,oh well,I am glad I plan to ws those particular ones any way. I am sure I lost other volunteers also,just didnt notice those ones from the window! About a month (or more)ago I lost Lupine sprouts in their containers due to below zero wind temps,I wish I would have covered them,but honestly thought they would make it. Since,I have sown new seeds, and they are on their way to be being plants.:)
I covered all of my sprouts the last two days,I figure the extra warmth will keep them growing or sprouting and prevent any possible losses. I only have tough love for my volunteers in my beds ,many of the seeds in my containers are ones that took me awhile to accomplish or are ones I plan to sell at my very first plant sale. So I didnt want to take any chances.
I am so glad to hear all your babies are making it,this wacky weather is enough to drive me nuts,I cant imagine how they feel. 70 degrees one day and snow the next and now I heard the FA is saying we are due for another crappy May! Oh why, oh why, is this happening now that I found out about ws'ing? This year I was smarter,I think,and put actual soil in the bottoms of my containers and topped it off with pro mix for the seeds,it is less expensive and I am hoping my plants will do better waiting in the containers. I will do my annual poppies,nasties,cosmos,and others that are tender or like to be planted out quickly, over the next few weeks.
Again I am so glad to hear everyone is having a great season already,I have to mention ws plants are hardier in the long run....I started Agastache Apricot Sprite under lights and ws,they all seemed to be making it through the winter just fine,but sometime over the last 2 months,the ones started inside perished and the ws ones are still showing some green! :)

The poppies planted out in the garden are still good. It is more like a zone 5 where they are.

Now I am relaxed about them, they will survive.
