So what do you sow for Fall plant out?

I've been reading alot of posts saying, "I sow until July 1st for fall planting", etc. Whay do you sow now for planting in the fall?

So the plants (perennials) will bloom next year. If wintersown they likely won't bloom until 2nd year anyway.

when you WS when it's hot, do you still cover them? I've been putting baggies with holes poked in them over mine. Can I do this in summer? Or will this bake the seeds?

Q&A: Flowers Deer Avoid Question: We live in upstate NY, and have several areas that would be great for naturalizing perennials and bulbs. Can you suggest plants that would be somewhat deer-resistant? Answer: Deer are crafty, and if they're hungry, persistent. This is to say, take all "deer resistant" recommendations with a grain of salt because hungry deer will eat just about anything. That said, here are some choices that would work where you live: astilbe, bee balm, bleeding heart, columbine, coreopsis, crocosmia, crocus, daffodil, dahlia, foxglove, gloriosa daisy, hellebore, lupine, moss pink, pincushion flower, poppy, purple coneflower, and thyme. The only guaranteed solution to keeping deer at bay is a fence -- one tall enough that deer can't jump.

This is my first season WS but, in July, I plant a winter crop of collards and kale in the ground under a lawn chair for shade. I plant them a little more deeply than recommended. Never had a problem with them overheating. I don't know how someone would use milk jugs to do this...

I sowed mine in Late May, they sprouted but are still no more than 4-5 inches tall :-/ I will be transplanting them into a raised bed to see if they take off soon. I'll post before and after pics if anyone wants them. I am *hoping* they'll give a nice fall show being so late O.o

Like Dee, I start all my seeds with Wintersowing. Prior to that, I bought flats at the local nurseries and a few at K-mart. Since I started wintersowing 5 years ago, I barely buy any plants, annuals or perennials. I find myself visiting local nurseries to see what is available, if they have something new that I would like to try wintersowing and find that, yes, the seedlings in the flats are bigger than mine, blooming already, but I know that mine will catch up within a few weeks, and once they get going will be stronger and healthier than the nursery grown. Mine will bloom longer and last longer than the store bought and, most of all, I will have 10 times as many plants, both annuals and perennials for my garden beds from Wintersowing the seeds than if I bought them. Most of the seeds I sow are from seed trades on the seed exchange forum and seeds that I collect from my plants in the beds and from the spring plant swap that I have every year, and most of the plants from the swap are also wintersown. Wintersowing and seed trading has introduced me to plants that I had never heard of before, never thought of before and are not available at local nurseries. I don't think I feel differently about the wintersown plants versus the perennials that I have bought in the past. I work hard to keep my gardens growing well, no matter where they come from or how I obtained them. All of them are my "babies" or my "children" as the grow and develop. What I do find though, is if i decide that I don't like a plant that is blooming, I'm more apt to just pull it out and either give it away or toss it in the trash heap or give it away. With wintersowing there are always so many extra seedlings that I don't feel bad about tossing one away and replace it with another one that is still waiting to be planted. This past spring, I planted over 800 seedlings, all wintersown from seed. That's about a typical spring planting for me with wintersowing. When I summer sow, I put the containers in plastic bags, with lots of vents, until they sprout. Then I cover them with plastic hardware cloth to keep the pigeons out - and keep the pots in shade.

I usually sow sweet william and biennial salvia for fall plant-out; this year I might do some foxglove and maybe try some other stuff as well.

If you do fall plantout, do it in early fall, not late; I've planted seedlings pretty darn close to wintry weather, and few survived. (2 years in a row, I think I've learned my lesson now). I think they'll survive winter better as an unplanted jug stuck a little ways into the dirt.

For some of them, I had a coldframe I could put over them, and they did fine.

I plant out through Thanksgiving. Depends on the weather though. As soon as things turn and the fall rains come - out they go. Oh yeah and when I recover from Ohio State football.

I am so proud of our Blue Jackets.

I'm not allowed to have containers out in the yard in July.

(...but that doesn't mean I don't)

I WS things like apples for transplanting into bigger pots & overwintering in a 'hole' for the season. I did lose 3 of them this winter, but I think that had a LOT to do with their sitting next to the driveway when the sealer-guy came. 3 of them did survive, though. I've had several for a couple seasons now, but they aren't nearly big enough to have a home of their own yet.

I let my Sweet Williams self-seed, but they aren't in a nice 'clump' anymore...more of a free-for-all in the space and not very tidy. It wouldn't hurt if I did another batch of them later for filling the gaps.
I think my echs are S.L.O.W. in coming up. Seems to me I WSd them first year I was WSing...05/06, and haven't done any since, but they don't seem to want to spread at all.
Any tips on those? And what successes do you have with different varieties? I do love several of the regular pinks...Magnus, Kim's Knee Hi, there's a huge flat pink one, too...do these all come true from seed?

Wondering, how big are your seedlings when doing a fall plant out? Do you put the seedlings in pots and let them grow for awhile before planting into the ground?
