What Is your favorite red climbing rose??
Comments (30)Cl. Etoile de Hollande is a very healthy, sturdy rose for me, in my area where blackspot isn't a problem. Mine doesn't rebloom, but then it isn't watered, fertilized, or pruned after its first flowering, either. As others have said, color and fragrance are stupendous. Obviously Olga's conditions don't best suit it, but it my climate it's a great rose. Melissa...See MoreWhat's Your Favorite Red Rose?
Comments (82)My personal favorite is The Squire. In my humble opinion, Oklahoma is better than Mr. Lincoln. The flowers are darker red, more refined, and smell stronger. There are huge healthy ten foot bushes of it around Santa Cruz. I've grown Papa Meilland budded and own root, presently I have a virus indexed own root plant from Vintage Gardens. In all these years and different permutations, it has grown in small zig-zags, and the flower color has been more magenta red than blackish crimson. I keep hoping it will improve and look like the pictures of Papa Meilland, but it won't perform unless coddled and given high culture. I've given up this year and ordered Charles Mallerin instead to replace Papa Meilland. Depending on your needs, these red roses are worthy of your attention: Black Baccara Oklahoma Royal Canadian Crimson Bouquet Lavaglut Sympathie Linda Campbell Black Jade Climbing Altissimo Doorenbos Selection (Camara is one of my favorites, but its coloring is vermilion with tips blushing black -- not a true red)...See MoreWhat is your favorite white Rose? Comments (10)I have a weakness for white roses, including some roses that are actually pale pink, but read like white to my eyes. I'm one of 'Mme. Jules Bouche's fans. Among the warm climate roses not too many come to mind, actually, though like all the world I like 'Mme. Alfred Carriere' and 'Cl. Mrs. Herbert Stevens'. Oh, and 'Odorata' is a good one, with a particularly good scent. 'Dupontii' makes a 10' x 10' shrub, self-supporting and arching, with sweet-scented milk-white blooms, well-behaved, distinctive, and handsome all year long. It's supposed to be an offspring of R. moschata, and looks it. Of the once-blooming old roses, 'Mme. Zoetmans', 'Vierge de Clery', or whatever the name of the white sport of 'Centifolia' is, 'Shailer's White Moss'. Of modern roses I've always liked the DA 'Winchester Cathedral', and the DA 'Sharifa Asma' is good (color pink but white in effect), a sturdy rose and one of the most fragrant around. Oh, the Pemberton Hybrid Musk 'Pax' is a fine plant and has particularly fine buds. And 'Penelope' is near white and has every virtue....See MoreYour favorite and best red roses
Comments (10)Sara Ann, I'm new to reds. Never liked them before. I'm starting to warm up to them. The only two I have are still youngsters, both came as little own root liner size, Firefighter and Dame de Coeur (an older HT). So far, Dame de Coeur is impressing me more. The reason I got it was due to me exercising my inter-auditory organ, which by the way, doesn't get exercised much any more. Mark Chamblee, of Chamblee's Roses, is trying to retire, and has his nursery up for sale, as many of us know. Because of this e has streamlined his stock, propagating only the best varieties as he waits for a buyer. Dame de Coeur is still in his lineup. Going on a hunch that there must be a reason for keeping DdC, I purchased one. As often happens with mail order gallons from Chamblee's, they come smaller than expected. I'm OK with that. Can't beat the price and quality, just being small is not something to gripe about. Dame de Coeur is definitely vigorous, more so than my Firefighter, who is no wimp, but just not as vigorous as DdC. Fragrance is very good with both roses. Flower quality is better with Dame de Coeur, more vibrant, richer red, better petal texture, and bloom life. Firefighter crisps for me in high heat too, Sara Ann. DdC holds up in heat pretty good. I would say that DdC black spots less than Firefighter, and it's foliage is more luxuriant. In bud, DdC's color is deep, dark red, almost black toned, very pretty. Its flower just has more poise to me than Firefighter's. I like them both, but Dame de Coeur gets the nod for being my favorite of the two. BTW, Rouge Royale is on my short list for giving a go in my rose bed. Moses...See Moreluxrosa
