Purple Sensation Allium

Before I plant these could someone tell me how they spread and if they are invasive? I planted the Drumstick Allium years ago and they spread like crazy with hundreds of tiny new bulbets each year. I don't want to do this to myself again. Please help me with any information you may have.......Maryl

I planted the Allium afflatunense both as the plain species and as cultivar Purple Sensation. I put them in a border with tall perennials, light sandy soil and irrigation in Berlin. I tended the garden in the two following years. Only thing I noticed was the Allium groups getting slightly bigger and when I transplanted a couple after flowering it looked like they formed few brood bulbs. I let the flower stalks stand for a while as they looked beautiful and cut them back only when they tipped over. And I never found any onion- or Allium- like seedlings when weeding.

thanks Lin. I guess they shouldn't be invasive then. I hope not because they are planted now.

So I guess I have to either move them back even more or to get rid of them... Or perhaps go ahead and cut the leaves back as they die off. I'm surprised that your other perenials don't get high enough to hide the foliage -- the foliage seems to wilt down to the ground quite quickly once they begin to die off.

Plant alliums as a cluster?

Contrary to the previous poster's opinion I would plant all your 7 Purple Sensations as a one cluster. You'll have a good display the very first year vs 1-2 'no impact' alliums here and there. Yes, they multiply and seed pretty freely, so after the second growing season you'll have enough to divide and move to another areas. Beware that PS foliage dies and look very ratty well before it start flowering, so you may want to plant them where it will be hided. In a picture below (mid-May), dying foliage of alliums is hided by still good looking foliage of daffodils that were planted in a same hole, but bloomed much earlier. Same spot three weeks before (you may see alliums flower heads between daffs):

Hi Pizzuti, Sorry that no one has been able to answer your questions. In the future, try posting about the ornamental alliums on the Perennials Forum or the Bulbs Forum since the Allium Forum seems to focus more on the edible alliums (onions, shallots, leeks, garlic, etc.). I also planted Allium caeruleum this fall. They were tiny-to-small sized bulbs, but I think it is just natural for this species to have small bulbs. The plants grow from 12-24 inches tall and have bloom umbels roughly the size of a quarter, so I think the size of the bulbs was appropriate. This species does not have the garden presence of 'Purple Sensation' and needs to be planted in relatively large groups for it to make an impact. They like full sun, well drained soil and a spot that remains relatively dry in the summer. Those conditions I just described would be ideal, but I am sure that this species is just forgiving and easy going as other allium types. When happy, the bulbs should multiply and the plant should reseed. Good luck with your new alliums and let us know how they do for you! :-)
