... I went to the market this morning and got this:

The bloom has a green center, the petals are pink inside but two of them have orange outside.

The seller had put it in very heavy soil so after unpotting and washing off all the soil, I planted it in small river stones for fear of it getting rotted because it has no roots. Here's a pix

I'd appreciate if someone could give it a name. Also, what can I give it to get roots fast?

Oh wow! Great find Xuan and what a stunning flower your amaryllis looks like it's going to be! =) Hmm.....I don't think I'll be able to help you identify what variety you have based on the pictures so far, but I would highly recommend you follow-up with pictures after the buds are fully open and I'm sure someone will be able to assist you in finding a name for this awesome marketplace find. As for root suppliments....any rooting hormone dusted lightly on the bottom of the bulb should aid in root growth and a few drops of SuperThrive (if available) should also give your bulb a good boost. Beautiful AVs and what a big bromeliad you have there. Fantastic!

What a great bulb, Xuan! You should be very happy for the great find!

I am going to go out a limb and throw out my guess and then see what the others think. It will probably be more evident when it opens completely, but from the photo and your description I would guess Candyfloss or a close relative maybe? Here is a pic of mine from last year:

Yikes cool down. I'm not a spammer. I came here for gardening and dropped in to this forum as well. WeÃ¯Â¿Â½re updating the main floor and upstairs of our home and had picked our paint, flooring, tiles, countertops, and crown molding. We pretty much know what we wanted to do but thought we should get some advice just to be really sure. We talked about everything we were doing and she confirmed some of our choices and suggested changes to others. She told us to return the accent tile for the bathroom because it was too busy. It turned out we didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t need it and it was expensive but the sales clerk said it was a must have so we bought it. We agreed with most of what she said and some we didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t. But as soon as I saw the paint go up I knew I was wrong and she was right so I told the painters to come back in the morning. Long story but there is a big difference in Atrium White my pick and Chantilly Lace her pick. She was gracious about it and took my calls and responded to emails in general she treated me right and I asked her to bill me extra but she didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t. And she really says 'well colormehappy.. and fancythis or fancythat'. All in all, I like her, I learned a lot from her blog and her book, and she saved me money. I'm sorry to have caused all this fuss and didn't mean to upset anyone.

Is ANYONE happy with downdraft ventilation? (allow me to vent)

We had a Thermador range with an integrated downdraft for about 14 years, in the peninsula. I liked the arrangement so well that we kept the location of the stove, refrigerator and sink for the remodel. We also kept the Thermador to use in the new kitchen. That was not a good idea. The stove had problems almost immediately when it was reinstalled. The downdraft was doing fine. Now we had a real problem. We had to replace the stove, but finding one that would fit was a problem. That wasn't the biggest problem for us. We thought we were going to have to install a hood. Our kitchen is at the end of a long room and I remember how I hated the overhead suspended cabinets that were in the original kitchen. I just didn't want something hanging from the ceiling and destroying the view. Since we are old, we wanted a range with a self cleaning oven. It was hard to find one with our specifications that would fit into the space designed for the new kitchen. We bought a Dacor range with a Dacor downdraft. These are separate units. I love the range and the downdraft works perfectly, for us. Long story to get to the point. When the new stove and downdraft were installed, the installers left the vent pipe with the opening upside down on a piece of wood under the house. That mean the downdraft did not work correctly. We could not figure out the problem, so my husband crawled into the crawl space and took pictures. I guess they figured old people would never figure this out. We had to hire another company to redo the venting. They took the vent pipe straight out to the side with no turns. It works perfectly. It even vents the steam from my rice cooker that is on the counter next to the stove. My point is that if installed correctly, a downdraft works.

Hi everyone, Likewise, I never heard of Berger, regardless of how it is pronounced. I had stocked up on several bales of ProMix BX a couple of years ago and am on my last bale at present. At one time, I considered trying to grow in containers of pure Perlite and purchased a big bale of it (a BIG bag of well over a cubic yard) and discovered that it had a lot of fines and was NOT horticultural grade Perlite and it was intended for insulating attics or other parts of new construction or possibly incorporation in concrete, so the local supplier agreed to take it back and refund. I still wonder how well a horticultural grade of pure Perlite might perform as a growing medium. I may experiment with a single pot of it. I think I still have a bag of Perlite somewhere. ZM

Oh, Frank, I love your Candyfloss, it's so beautiful! I wish mine would turn out to be Candyfloss.
Also, you know, I think I've got seriously infected with the "amaryllis fever"... I went back to the market for a 2nd trip and got another bulb, which I tried not to buy in the first trip... This one has two almost-spent blooms but there're still 2 buds, and one more scape coming up too. I love its deep red color and I had to go back to get it, although it cost wayyyy toooo much ($2.50). I guess maybe because of the Lunar New Year coming up, flowers are more expensive.

And then, to make everything worse, when I was buying some pots... I saw a cluster of 5 budding amaryllis bulbs in a big pot that was selling for $10.00! I asked to have it for $8.00 and they agreed! I couldn't carry the pot home on my motorbike...so hubby will have to pick it up for me tomorrow! I'll post a pix when I have it at home.
Wow, I'm going to have lots of hippis for Tet holiday (Tet = Lunar New Year) which is coming up in two weeks time.
I'm so glad I went to the market today!

Oh Boy! A mystery to watch! How will it turn out in the end? Who is the mysterious lady?

Well, who ever she is she is so lovely hidden in her veils! HEr color is a lot like Faro, but she will have red central stripe on the upper petals is she is.

Awesome, Xuan! I'm sure I can't ID the first flower, but I think you got some great deals, and some beautiful blooms! Can't wait to see the rest of them... I wish I could find some leftover bulbs around my area, but every store is devoid of bulbs... they are all putting seeds on display for spring sowing!
