Gardeners Beware

Here I sit with both thumbs in splints for the next 12 weeks!

Remember all that gardening I did to catch up on my gardens after getting new knees? Well, finally gave int o the pain at the base of my thumbs when I found out I could not sand using scissors because of the pressure..FOund Out I either have stress fractures or severe inflammation of the little bones at the base of the thumb, and have to wear the splints untilnew bone grows!

Please excuse all typing booboos while I rehabilitate the hands!

Jodi...you be careful with your hands, too, chum, and if your thumbs hurt like mine did, get you to a DR soonest so they can start healing!

We knew him personally and figured that he would eventually weed himself out of the business. His gardens were very nice though unmarked. Last we heard he was learning to read. We ordered from him a couple of times only because we couldn't get certain iris from other sources. Yes, they were cheaper than anywhere else but not a single bonus was included!!! WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!!!!

Wow, my mom forwarded me this link and I can hardly believe the rant I'm reading here. The first time I came to the Hardy's garden I was a little girl tagging along with mom. Now a bonafide gardener myself, mom and I buy each other plants for our birthdays. My last visit was 2 yrs ago. Here are the facts: their garden is well run, their plants robustly healthy (the ones I got still beautifully producing every year), and their customer service top notch. Sure, they don't mail order, but people should feel free to run their business however fit them. Perhaps I'm biased since I've known them a long time, but the Hardys are the nicest people! My 2 cents...

Well after reading all these stories (and having a chuckle at the funny ones) I am thinking maybe gardening isnt as relaxing as it is made out to be! But then I recall how, whilst living in the city I decided to make a garden in our very small yard and planted sunflowers ... as they grew we smiled with delight and they kept growing.. when the flowers opened in all their glory they stood well over our 6ft fence.. they flowered for a long time but as is their want they past their used by date and it was time for them to go.. For weeks after total stranges came up to me (as I sat out the front relaxing) and told me how wonderful they were and how happy they made them feel in a dreary world on the cycle to work and home.. It really did make it all worth while. Needless to say we continued to plant sunflower.. not just for our pleasure but for that of the total strangers they brough happiness to! On a less joyful note.. I recall a garden I spent all summer making.. I was in a heavy clay area and had a bobcat come in to dig through the clay to make the soil better for all concerned.. all was going well as the garden grew. We had not seen rain in many months so when a sprinkle started I was so happy.. however by the 6th day of rain I noticed the garden had filled with water.. my plants were swimming.. I spent hours making drains out of the garden to release the build up.. (we were on a slight slope) The garden didnt recover that year.. hasnt happened since.. but oh what a LOT of work and so very sad. To get the amount of rain in perspective.. a few days later our very large gum tree fell (taking out the front fence) roots and all.. I think that year I worked harder than I ever have and I wasnt working!! And yet Im soon to start it all again.. I cant wait to get back into the garden.. My friends always say I happiest elbow deep in manure (though those arnt the words they use ) Happy gardening!

I'm so sorry to hear about this, Lizalily... please be careful while healing! We use our hands so often, and they're probably the one thing we don't think of injuring.

Actually, I had both of my thumbs dislocated many years ago, and Larry popped them right back into place, which was horribly painful at the time. It took quite a while of treating them carefully before they healed, staying in place.

Larry is my home doctor, chiropractor and massage therapist! He's also my nutritionist... he makes sure I'm eating right, taking my vitamins, and he keeps my body in alignment. He's quite good at keeping me in one piece!

I'm very lucky that he's so knowledgeable about nutrition and pressure points and realigning the bones... all his years of martial arts training and medical study have paid off. We visit our doctor once every three months on a regular basis, though... and I'm careful to tell him about anything that's bothering me.

You just be careful, Lizalily! I think quite a few of us here are at the age where we think we can do more than we actually should! And we wind up straining ourselves, or hurting our bones and muscles and tendons... I have to keep remembering that I'm not a spring chicken anymore! I can't lift or move the weight I once could, and I can't overdo working at any one thing. I suspect it's the same for a few of us!

The only thing we can overdo is prayer... and that can move mountains! I'll be overexerting my prayers, remembering you and your injury... get better, Lizalily! :-)

Take care Lizalily. I know how much hand "things" can hurt and our thumbs are used for everything!! Hope you got caught up enough to last just long enough to heal!

Take care Lizalily, the hand has so many little bones, that any procedure is considered mayor, so take care of it and time to cure it.

Liza, please get better! I'm so sorry that your hands are laid up :-( Start popping some calcium with vitamin D. Anything to mend those teeny tiny bones!!
