what zone am I in?

I think I'm in 10, but keep getting 9 from different sources. The lowest temperature we have ever had was 26 degrees at night for four days in 2006, so is that enough to knock me down to 9? Or is it totally irrelevant since what I really need is sun resistance instead of hardiness?

From the standpoint of roses and winter damage, zones 8b, 9, and 10 are interchangeable, so it's irrelevant. But if you fall below 30 every few years, it's zone 9.

If you have very hot summers, that affects what varieties will do well, but the only way to find out is to ask here, or see recommendations by local rose societies in hot-summer areas. Some are available via ARS.org.

To be honest, it's apples and oranges. The only one I would trust is the sunset zone classification, because the rest are based on winter temps. and not relevant to most vegetables (barring overwintered vegetables of course). Now regarding those three based on winter temps., some may have taken the *lowest* winter temperature ever recorded. For Coquille, that is 12 F. That's zone 8 or bordering on 7b for inland locations. However, most years won't see a low of 12 F. especially if you are right on the coast. That explains the zone 9 classification. I'd say this is the most correct of the three because it considers the average annual coldest temperature recorded, not the lowest low possible. For example, we typically record an annual low of -40 F here in zone 2, but the coldest ever recorded was -56 F. Your zone 9 is of course worlds apart from a zone 9 in Texas. I received the McClure & Zimmerman catalog today. It has the Floradapt Hardiness Zone Map included on page 4. It is in very small print though but ok to use. When people ask me what zone I am in, I always say 6 but borderline 5. I realize my planting success seems closer to zone 5 results, especially if we have a harsh winter with those nice ice storme we get. My observation of the Floradapt map is that it puts me right into zone 5. Since I was interested, I looked up the info onlie about the map differences: "Rutgers and Floradapt Plant Hardiness Maps These maps are based on winter-cold isotherms. The Rutgers Plant Hardiness Map, Zones of the United States and Canada (Cook College, Rutgers, Martin Hall, P.O. Box 231, New Brunswick, NJ 08903; $7), has 26 zones based on absolute recorded minimum temperatures. To its credit, the Rutgers map divides the United States into 13 climates east of the 100th meridian, and 13 different ones west of it. Despite the usefulness of this map to gardeners, it's rarely used. Likewise the Floradapt Map (by John Sabuco and the White Oak Group, Inc., 320 202nd St., Chicago Heights, IL 60411). I looked in my gardening book and it appears you are on the border of 9a and 9b. I live in Pinellas and we are 9b. I really think you are 9a, becaue you can get slightly colder than the gulf coastal area. It can make a big difference with some tropical plants.

Good luck Ang. You can plant anything just about, except things that are going to vine a lot. Pumpkins and most squash produce so heavy, you will have a jungle. We don't have our garden finished yet, but it is all outside. I have started some seeds inside and with the crazy weather we have had this year, some are anxious to get planted! LOL You like poppers, so different peppers would work well, some 'maters, lettuces and herbs. Just go to a garden center and they will tell you what you can grow and what to avoid. Just don't let them sell you the farm! Some like to make you feel like you need every tool and aides known to man. LOL I also was worried about light, but the heat may be a bigger problem, but you can put something up to shade them when needed. The plastic containers work great, for catching excess water. I start some of my seeds in the plastic containers fast food comes in and they are placed into the bigger low sided plastic storage bins. You might find plants on Craigs list even. Have fun.

Thank you, I am in the San Gabriel Valley in southern california, and I consider our summers to be very hot, but not Las Vegas hot or Arizona hot :) The nights can cool down to 65-75 degrees on days that reach 90-100. Powdery mildew loves it here! I think that average temps fall in the mid 80's during our very long summer season, with the hottest part july-september and burning sun all day long from about 7am to about 6pm.
In the winter, which lasts about a month, day temps can fall to 50's, night temps usually 40's, sometimes 30's. Other than 2006, I don't remember any other time we had 20's, but I guess it could happen again.
Michaelg, I also thought that anything above 8 or even 7 is interchangeable when it comes to roses.
However, are there roses that need winter chill to do well that I need to avoid?

From the standpoint of California gardening, the SGV is far different from the immediate coast. 10 is generally within just a mile or two or three from the ocean in So Cal: "the fog belt", Sunset Zone 24, Powdery Mildew-ville. Inland where June-Gloom is gone by May, heat loving roses do better and powdery mildew isn't so bad. More importantly for Southern California is knowing the Sunset Zone, which is probably 18 or 19 in the SGV.

Rose classes you will not have much success with are Gallicas and Albas--they need real winter chill. Some of the big Bourbons are not that happy in So Cal either--Zephie Drouhin comes to mind--as well as the multiflora climber 'New Dawn'. Both good roses, just not here.

a short word of advice: Look up how the USDA determies hardyness zones on your google page you might not see a phrase mentioning how hot it gets.

Darnit! I've been dreaming of Zepherine Drouhin for 2 years, but was waiting for some shade trees to grow and my shade structure to be built... all for nought since Zephie likes colder weather than I have. That all the other roses will be happier is a consolation though, no more crunchy blooms!

There are over 10,000 commercially available rose varieties!

Don't worry if one particular cultivar isn't recommended for your area, because there are probably at least a dozen others almost identical to the one you were interested in that will perform better in your area.

One of the distinct advantages of having so many cultivars out there to choose from.
