Hi,

I hope this is the right forum to ask this question. if not, can someone redirect me? thanks:

i am about to buy a 5' high pinus strobus pendula. i heard that i might need to /want to train it, if i want to achieve that tumbling, hunched-over old man look. something about "training the middle leader?"

But I can't get any more info than that. any advice would be appreciated.

Before throwing money at an unknown issue perhaps you should do a soil test. Your county extension can help you get this done. pH, Minimum 4.0 pH, Maximum 6.5. I assume it was a container grown cultivar. Did you notice it being root bound when planted? If so did you take some time to correct this issue? There are too many unknowns here to give you a correct diagnosis. If your soil test proves to be normal and the conifer is still in decline then dig it and replace with a conifer of your choice. Dave

interior browning is normal. and complicated by recent transplant ... drought.. any stressor .... NEVER cut them off.. until you are sure that the buds for next year are dead... which you will find out next spring ... a pic would really help ... coming to some real usable conclusions ... ken

INTERIOR yellowing is normal ... there is much more in stress years related to high heat and/or drought... and very common in transplant year .... 2 pix below .... keep it deeply and properly watered for the rest of this fall and all next year ... let us know if you don't know what proper watering is .. the key is the buds for next season ... do they look OK ... if they are turning black.. or mushy ... that branch is dead .... good luck .. ken normal not normal
